More Balkanization National Spanish Spelling Bee held in New Mexico

On Saturday, Evelyn Juarez, a seventh-grader from Santa Cruz, New Mexico, won the first annual National Spanish Spelling Bee.
Bizantinismo, which means excess luxury, was the word upon which Juarez who attends Carlos F. Vigil Middle School clinched the first-ever title.
The contest was held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerqueand organized by the Alliance for Multilingual Multicultural Education (AMME) and the New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education (NMABE).
The Albuquerque Journal reports that 11 students from four different states participated in the spelling bee.
Daniel Ward, editor of Language Magazine, said:Were celebrating the multilingualism of America. Were recognizing that, like most of the worlds other children,[our kids will] need more than one language to succeed in our global village.
