Let me put it this way:
Excerpt:
Puerto Rican Rubén Martínez' Statement to US Senate
Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee:
....
Colonial rule, consented or not, constitutes a denial of the elementary principle of democracy which requires participation of the governed in determining the laws under which they live. There is no such thing as a democratic colony. It is a contradiction in terms, at best, a gilded cage.....
The territorial status of Puerto Rico still stands simply because such has been the will of the United States. For many years you have shunned and criminalized independence. Now you cringe at the mere thought of a petition for statehood because granting statehood to a Latin American and Caribbean nation like Puerto Rico is incompatible with your national interests. Therein lies the reason behind the contradictory nature of H.R. 2499.
The United States is not, and does not aspire to be, a multinational state; multicultural maybe, multinational never.
Those of us in Puerto Rico who respect ourselves and believe in democracy and self-determination repudiate this fraudulent maneuver designed to perpetuate colonialism and allow Congress to avoid facing its decolonizing obligation. We will denounce this hoax in Puerto Rico and before the international community.
What should Congress do? It should simply declare its intention to put an end to colonial rule in Puerto Rico by disposing of the territory, and commit itself to receive and act upon a proposal for decolonization formulated by the people of Puerto Rico through a procedural mechanism of its choice, among alternatives recognized by international law.
Puerto Ricans – and I am sure I speak for the great majority of our people – are sick and tired of the condescending and cavalier attitude of the U.S. government so crudely reflected in H.R. 2499. Enough is enough.
More than one hundred years of colonialism have not broken our national spirit nor diminished our profound sense of identity as a Latin American and Caribbean nation. Regardless of your decision concerning H.R. 2499, you will never admit Puerto Rico as a state because we are a separate nation. And precisely because we are a separate nation, in the end, freedom for Puerto Rico will prevail and we will be masters of our own destiny.

Get a clue. There have already been several votes in Puerto Rico. The PEOPLE OF PUERTO RICO had a choice of becoming independent, becoming the 51st state or leaving things as is. So far, they have consistently voted to keep things as is.
Yes. I think the only reason they don't vote for statehood is because there are a few that want their own country, and these influence many to just vote to keep things as they are.

Frustrating for the staters and for the independent guys. I suspect that the staters will be getting more momentum now, due to the economics hitting small countries hard.

Sigh! Again, that is irrelevant to the morality of maintaining a people in colonial status for more than 100 years while proclaiming the virtues of self determination to your own people and the rest of the world. It doesn't justify it just as the consent of a Masochist doesn't justify my ripping off his arm or savagely whipping him. Why? Because I have a moral responsibility to be consistent in what I proclaim to be with how I behave regardless of temptations to do otherwise

Hispanic's are taking over, and they breed 5-6kids a piece so you know the populations will exceed. As a half Latina I can tell you that once there is a hispanic manger working somewhere all they are going to hire is hispanci co-workers. Hispanics stick together unlike other ethnicity, and we come in al shades so we can make America our own little world lol. This is eventually going to get a lot of people upset and I can understand. Learn that spanish people.

Yes, I know but people won't stop it so I guess I'll have to leave eventually because I can't stop it by myself. Apparently the nation is going to go without a fight.

That's unfortunate that police & nurses are reluctant to learn a foreign language considering the fact that they hold duties of public service. They might have gotten their way but let one death or accident result from the police or hospitals not having an available staff of foreign language interpreters around and I can assure you that those in charge of the Police & Hospitals will likely employ policy that mandates bilingual interpreters after the civil suit occurs. It's very plausible!
In America you'll always have a group of people who for whatever reasons don't speak English very well so to cast them to the curb by not providing services to them in their language is a disservice to society.
As Americans we're smarter than that.
This is America the United States of all places, and our Native language is English not Spanish. When immigrants from other places like Asian, Germany, Frence, India, Middle east, and African come to America they are force to learn english.... so hispanics need to learn the language as well. I don't mind them hiring 2 or 3 hispanic who are bilingual thats fine, but stepping on everyone elses feet and forcing them to learn a second language is a little extreme dont you think? If that's the case they should hire bilingual people of all races and in every enviorment. As a half Dominican I can say that everyone should be treated fair. If you can't speak english bring a daughter, cousin or someone who speaks english. Other immigrants shouldnt have to suffer the cost of having to learn two languages english/spanish just because hispanics are lazy tp learn english.

Nah there is an unexpected reaction coming. Even the hispanics who are here know what will happen if the gate swings wide open. I think in time and not much time they will be allies in the fight against illegal immigration. They have much to lose in this battle also!!! Strange Bedfellows

I know- should we have people at all emergency facilities who speak every known language just in case someone who only speaks that language has an emergency?

The impact of the 50M hispanic's have not reach certain parts of the nation. Once the middle class truely realise how this is going to impact them people will start speaking out. I like speaking spanish, but I don't think other people should have to loose their jobs or suffer just because the immigrants coming to the country are too lazy to learn the language. If Asians and Africans move over here and are force to speak english why should they have to learn spanish as well that will make it twice as hard for them.

I have watch good jobs here in Central Fl go down the drain just because the company hired a hispanic maneger. Once that hispanic maneger gain the tittle "hiring maneger" they make it impossible for people of other nationalities to get hire there. I've went to places where the cashier or associate knew no english what so ever. I have watch hispanic people walk up to a black or a white associate and start speaking spanish to them as though the native language in this country was spanish. It's not fiar....if you leave you country to come live some place you need to adopt that culture, language, and functions.

Well, if it hadn't been for the automatic birthright entitlement maybe something could still be done. It's not just Mexicans and South Americans taking advantage of it- even Chinese, other Asians, etc. do also when pregnant women can manage to fly over here and give birth- it's just that it's much more difficult to get here from Asia and other places. It's a loophole that's heavily taken advantage of. Liberal judges have interpreted the 14th Amendment this way. When you look at the words of those who created this Amendment it's clear that was not their intention.

I see the same thing in Texas. It's only gotten really bad in the last 10 years or so. It's like it happened all at once almost.

You see, asking them to stop the imigrants is asking them to stop making humongous gobs of money. Demanding that they to stop the immigrants is demanding that they pay you a decent salary which will cut into their profit.

So they might smile at you benignly when you fume and make promises, and posture, but cut their own prosperous throats by getting rid of the very imigrants that are making tjhem richer via exploitation-are you serious?

Sorry, English is just the De Facto language of the USA. Also, depending on the region you live will determine what languages you hear and might want to consider learning. The Southwest has a high count of Spanish speakers. Nebraska you'll hear more German, Louisiana region you'll hear more French, do you get my drift?

If an immigrant becomes a naturalized citizen they must understand basic English. If an immigrant becomes a resident alien , comes by visa or passport they need "not know" English. If you come illegally well they don't need to know English either.

If a company requires that their employees learn a foreign language for whatever reason then the employer should provide all costs and provide incentives for their employees obtaining an additional job skill, becuase that's what it is, a job skill.

I live in Los Angeles, Ca. I run into all kinds of Hispanics who choose to not speak English. It's their choice. It's also my choice to not talk to them if I don't feel like speaking Spanish to them. Where I live Spanish is a widely spoken language so considering the fact that I already speak English, it doesn't hurt me if I learn Spanish, right?

Anyhow, I would recommend to all people who come to the USA that it's a good idea to learn some English.
