Al Gore: NSA Surveillance 'Violates the Constitution'

..."This in my view violates the constitution. The fourth amendment and the first amendment—and the fourth amendment language is crystal clear...It is not acceptable to have a secret interpretation of a law that goes far beyond any reasonable reading of either the law or the constitution and then classify as top secret what the actual law is."

The former vice president also pushed President Obama and Congress to revisit the laws underlying the NSA program.

Hope you're all having a great weekend!

Our little family unit is together for the duration.

No business trips, no community functions, no company!

We're going to call it 'movie night" and leave it at that.

Thanks Jaxxon,
That's precisely the type of weekend we're having,
Did a little bit of yard work this morning, I just finished making some guacamole to go along with my wife's slow roasted beef.
This is the first weekend in quite a while that we're actually going to sit down with our kids for dinner.
As you know Jaxxon, it's been busy out here with graduations and family stuff...
Life goes on friend, looks like we're both making the best of it.

Sounds good V.

Making the most of now.

Spent most of the day bush-hogging, weed eating and a few other hot and nasty jobs.

Got cleaned up and just fired up the grill.

Found a good movie for later. Fortunately I know a website that's packed with them.

;)

Good to hear from you.

Hope you enjoy the evening.

Hong Kong's pro-democracy activists rally around Snowden

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is reminding Hong Kongers of their devotion to the rule of law and resistance to interference from mainland China.

The Chinese government controls many facets of life in Hong Kong, the former British colony that has been a "special administrative region" of the People’s Republic for the past 16 years. But the fate of Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower, may not be one of them.

And as Mr. Snowden prepares for a legal battle in the courts to fight off an expected US extradition request, pro-democracy activists here have seized on the fugitive as a symbol of their resistance to Beijing’s increasing involvement here.

Snowden’s presence “galvanizes the importance of the rule of law, and underlines the difference between Hong Kong and the mainland,” where the government’s word goes unchallenged, says Michael DeGolyer, who teaches politics at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Rulings push jury selection in Trayvon Martin case into second week

A judge's decision to sequester jurors for the murder trial of a Florida neighborhood watchman who fatally shot an unarmed black teenager in 2012 will slow an already painstaking selection process to find impartial minds amid saturation media coverage.

Jury selection in the racially charged case of teenager Trayvon Martin is headed into a second week as prosecutors and defense lawyers on Friday worked to cope with the judge's sequester order and another decision to expand the pool of potential jurors.

While it will make jury selection more complicated, lawyers on both sides say they are happy with the decision to isolate jurors during testimony and deliberations.

"I think it helps with making sure that the jury can focus solely on the evidence that comes from the trial," said Benjamin Crump, the lawyer for the Martin family.

Despite the slow progress and the high dismissal rate of prospective jurors, both sides appear confident an unbiased jury can be seated locally, despite the controversy and news coverage generated by the case.

US Allies demand explanations from Obama about NSA spying

Germany pissed. Calls for boycotts.

----------

How NSA Surveillance Jeopardizes Obama's G-8 Trip to Europe

President Obama's task in Europe this week, already daunting as the death toll in Syria mounts and the pressure for a more assertive U.S. policy there grows, has been made even more challenging by the recent disclosures of American surveillance in allied countries...

...Peter Schaar, Germany's freedom of information commissioner, told Reuters he wanted "clarity" from the United States "regarding these monstrous allegations of total monitoring of various telecommunications and Internet services." Another German official has called for a boycott of the companies. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is running for reelection, has said she will raise the issue with Obama this week either at Lough Erne or in Berlin.

"The most upset party in all of this, I think, is the Germans," said Michael J. Geary, an assistant professor at Maastricht University in the Netherlands and an expert on Europe. "The Germans were the most snooped-upon country, apparently, in March. In a country where memories of the former East German Stasi are still quite fresh, the response has been quite critical." Geary described Europeans as "peeved" and "quite annoyed" at the U.S. actions and said they have the potential to set back sensitive trade negotiations and do damage to transatlantic relations. "It's a major PR disaster for the administration," he said. "Now, they have really lost the moral high ground."

Some Americans may be okay with big brother monitoring their every communication, but our closest allies are vocally angry to find that the NSA ha been spying on them too.

Supreme Court invalidates Arizona voter registration law

Indiana requires a voter to prove their identity with a photo ID. If a resident doesn't have a drivers license or a passport the state will issue a Voter ID card free.

There were some worries about minority voter participation at first (I was one of the people that voiced concerns about the law) But it was upheld by the courts and after it was implemented minority participation actually increased.

The state partnered with civic and religious organizations in an effort to enroll every person that had the right to vote and it was successful.

There were also measures in the law that allowed anyone without proper ID to vote anyway. Once the state verified their residency the vote counted just like any other, so no one got turned away at the polls.

States like Arizona went way too far with these kinds of laws.

In 2012 the republican party tried to use laws like this to suppress the minority vote and it blew up in their face.

Anything that puts a barrier between an American citizen and their right to cast their vote is unacceptable.

Thanks for the post. Very interesting.
