As the street artist Pure Evil said recently, people have written on walls since Roman times but graffiti as we know it as a form of creative, urban expression started out in the Eighties, in New York and then London. With remarkable speed the outlaws tagging trains with their jagged tags were embraced by the art establishment,graffiti became street art and then (Pure Evil again)the herald of gentrification on estate agents brochures.
