Civil rights brought equality in sitting together at the restuarant lunch counter.

Now if only EVERYONE could afford to go there and buy their lunch.

They need to upgrade food stamps so ALL can eat at the lunch counter.

Guess they didn't think this through completely.

<LOL>

The poor souls that you spit on receive about $3 a day in food stamps. I am not sure how far that will take you at the lunch counter. I think you would be better off thanking God that you are not in their situation.

During the civil rights movement it was IMPORTANT that ALL people had an OPPORTUNITY to eat at a lunch counter no matter the color of their skin.(drink from the same water fountain, use the same bathrooms, sit in the front of the bus, swim in the same swimming pool, find EQUAL employment and housing opportunities).

IF people back then couldn't AFFORD those things, they wouldn't have been willing to SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES to have that EQUAL right.

At least LBJ didn't just sit back and thank God he wasn't in that situation. He tried, but it didn't work. The GREAT SOCIETY he envisioned, did not materialize.

Where is the outrage at the lunch counter???

Why are there so many who are unable to take advantage of the rights their parents/grandparents fought so hard to achieve??

On second reading I may have misinterpreted your post.

The Great Society did accomplish a lot though. Just look at Medicare alone.

Prior to Medicare, about one-half of America’s seniors did not have hospital insurance and more than one in four elderly were estimated to go without medical care due to cost concerns. Today, nearly all seniors have access to affordable health care and only about 14 percent of seniors are below the poverty line.

That in itself has changed every-bodies life for the better.

Lyndon Johnson's fight for civil rights passage was one of the bravest acts I've ever seen from an American president. He certainly had his flaws, but the American people owe him a lot.
