I'm not going to disagree about what is an immigrant and what constitutes "illegal", because we all know that illegal means unlevel playing field somewhere in the jobs market which equates to lowered wages.

But, there is a different problem going on in America, and that problem is what government policies are currently trending to address. Population growth. We're underperforming. It's a fact:

America’s demographic squeeze
Double bind

Dec 12th 2012
http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyiname...

ALTHOUGH America’s fiscal problems are among the worst in the rich world, its policymakers long took comfort that, when it came to demography, its outlook was one of the best. Because Americans have more babies and welcome more immigrants, they had more room to deal with the coming burden of pensions and health care for the elderly.....But the savage recession of 2007-09 and its aftermath have not just deepened America’s fiscal hole; they may have diminished those demographic advantages. America’s fertility rate has been falling since 2007, as has net immigration. Compounding this, the share of the population that is active in the labour force has slipped, both because of ageing and because of the recession’s lingering effects......(Cont.)

.....
Kindly read the rest of this story in order to get a better understanding of WTH they're thinking in Washington that they want to amnesty all these illegal immigrants and afford them a pathway to citizenship. It has nothing to do with compassion or kindness or anything but a perceived need for more bodies to labor to support other bodies who can no longer labor. We haven't even come close to meeting our estimates of population growth owing to the Great Recession. That puts us at a competitive disadvantage, a situation we've never before had in America.

Something to think about.

i respectfully disagree, recent report from the Federal Reserve forecasts low job growth, little improvement in the job market--for the next 3 years. Est GDP of , at best 3%. If that holds true for the 3 years, at the end of that time, the debt will be so large it will be impossible to climb back out of the whole. fact is.. congress keeps bringing this bullshit immigration reform every year. and every year the people vote it down. at last count, I think we have voted it down 4 times.
and you call it ignorant bigotry?
the people just want the immigration laws to be enforced. there is no need for any "reform".
Attrition through enforcement is a good idea.

That is funny. Especially since the topic of the thread is that a overwhelming majority of Americans are for legalization. By the way, pools have been saying the same thing for years. It is pretty clear how the people would vote.

Magadala-what gave you the idea that it is only "Mexicans" that jump the border? Or that they are the only people here "illegally"? Why don't you go to Mexico and try living there. Unless you are of the minority in that country that has money, you cannot afford to come here "legally". The wages paid to workers is terrible. There is so much corruption and unrest in that country we should be ashamed of ourselves for not helping them get out of that mess. Instead of focusing on our neighbors, we focus on countries across the globe that do not want our help. Reform needs to happen to help the people that really need a new beginning, want to work hard and have a chance at a good life. We forget why our ancestors came here-for that very reason.
.You're right it's not only Mexicans. The thing is our government is supposed to do and be there for US citizens period. No reform is needed you just have to wait in line like other immigrants who wish to come here legally. I say instead of reform we need to recall all the idiots who want to offer benefits to illegals. We have to take care of US Citizens before anything this is part of the reason we are so broke, schools closing, hospitals closing etc....

First of all where does it say in our immigration laws that we will can grant amnesty 12-20 million illegal aliens when we need bodies to labor to support other bodies?

We allow in over 900,000 immigrants a year for years and that hasn't changed, that's not counting the current birth rate. Google "Chain Migration" and tell me if you still have the same opinion of needing more bodies in our country!

1965 Immigration act

Quote: Among those who more accurately foresaw the future effects of the change in immigration law was a certain Myra C. Hacker, Vice President of the New Jersey Coalition, who testified at a Senate immigration subcommittee hearing:

"In light of our 5 percent unemployment rate, our worries over the so called population explosion, and our menacingly mounting welfare costs, are we prepared to embrace so great a horde of the world's unfortunates? At the very least, the hidden mathematics of the bill should be made clear to the public so that they may tell their Congressmen how they feel about providing jobs, schools, homes, security against want, citizen education, and a brotherly welcome ... for an indeterminately enormous number of aliens from underprivileged lands."

"We should remember that people accustomed to such marginal existence in their own land will tend to live fully here, to hoard our bounteous minimum wages and our humanitarian welfare handouts ... lower our wage and living standards, disrupt our cultural patterns ..."

"Whatever may be our benevolent intent toward many people,[the bill] fails to give due consideration to the economic needs, the cultural traditions, and the public sentiment of the citizens of the United States." (U.S. Senate, Subcommittee on Immigration and Naturalization of the Committee on the Judiciary, Washington, D.C., Feb. 10, 1965. pp. 681-687.)

Of course Democrat Senator (I can't swim) Kennedy

Had to put in his 2 cents:

(Please read his comments carefully.)

Hart-Celler Act hearings 1965 Quote:

Senate immigration subcommittee chairman Edward Kennedy (D-MA.) reassured his colleagues and the nation with the following:

"First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same ... Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset ... Contrary to the charges in some quarters,[the bill] will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area, or the most populated and deprived nations of Africa and Asia ... In the final analysis, the ethnic pattern of immigration under the proposed measure is not expected to change as sharply as the critics seem to think."

Sen. Kennedy concluded by saying,

"The bill will not flood our cities with immigrants. It will not upset the ethnic mix of our society. It will not relax the standards of admission. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs." (U.S. Senate, Subcommittee on Immigration and Naturalization of the Committee on the Judiciary, Washington, D.C., Feb. 10, 1965. pp. 1-3.)

We are sitting on a population time bomb!

Do you dispute the fact that B.O. & his Chicago thugs promise the American tax payers if they gave them the $863 Billion stimulus package they would keep unemployment below 8%?

223 Million Americans still out of work.

B.O. and Pelosi manage to add $6 Trillion more to the debt, that our Children,Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren will have to pay!

13 Million more Americans are on Food Stamps since B.O. took office!

Now tell me you didn't really vote for this guy?

Again??
