Here Jaxxon, this'll turn you on.

Right now, under the leadership of Putin, Russia is enacting and enforcing a series of anti-gay laws.

Abuse and persecution of gays and lesbians throughout Russia is both common and on the rise.

This what happens when hate becomes policy and prejudice is endorsed by the state.

I know you think you're somehow making a dig at me with this post, but what you've done is brought up a very serious issue that deserves some discussion.

You up to that?

Russia's Anti-Gay Laws Become a Part of the Olympic Narrative

Ahead of Sochi, NBC and LGBT groups grapple with Russia's recent crackdown on the gay community

Widely criticized laws recently passed in Russia that target the LGBT community have gained the attention of U.S. media and scrutiny has turned to how they will affect the 2014 Winter Olympics, which will take place in Sochi in February. The International Olympic Committee gained "assurance" from Russia that the laws – which among other things, ban the "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" – would not be applied to the athletes and those visiting for the games...

Well, considering the nature of Topix, if there's going to be a place to have a reasonable conversation we're going to have to create it ourselves, so here's my first (and probably my last) attempt to do just that.
The idea is to have one place where we can talk about anything we want and do it without the constant fighting and personal attacks that have consumed so many other threads on this site.
Feel free to post links to music videos, news articles, interesting websites or just talk about what's on your mind. You can't go off topic here because the topic is everything...or nothing at all.
If this is going to work it's going to take some effort on the part of the people that decide to post here so I have one simple request...IGNORE THE TROLLS.
We should be open to any and all opinions or viewpoints whether we agree or disagree, but when the trolls show up to ruin this thread like they have so many others, just ignore them.
Regardless of the provocation, ignore them and eventually they will go somewhere else looking for the attention they crave.
I'm posting this in 'immigration reform' for two simple reasons. First, whether you're on the left or the right of the political spectrum, immigration reform is an issue that many of us are very interested in and it will undoubtedly be one of many subjects discussed. Second, if there's anyplace on this site that desperately needs some reasonable conversation, it has to be the immigration reform threads.
So there you have it, The Big Stupid Thread About Everything, a place where we can talk about anything we want.
What's on your mind today?
Good morning Jax. 46 posts and so far so good.

It's a glorious day and frankly, what I'm doing with my private time is none of your concern.

I don't know if this thread will ever amount to anything or not, but I'll give a shot for a day or two and see what happens.

Things got a little tense on another thread last night, but the situation has been resolved satisfactorily.

Have a good day and don't expect a reply to your next post...there won't be one.

Two same-sex couples in Virginia filed suit on Thursday asking a federal judge to declare the state’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional.

The class-action lawsuit, filed on behalf of all similarly situated gay and lesbian couples in Virginia, is the latest in a growing number of lawsuits across the country challenging restrictive marriage laws after the US Supreme Court invalidated a portion of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in late June.

The suit, filed in federal court in Harrisonburg, Va., takes aim at state provisions considered among the most restrictive in the nation. In addition to the constitutional ban limiting marriage to a union between one man and one woman, Virginia law also bars civil unions, partnership contracts, or any other arrangements that seek to bestow the privileges or obligations of marriage to same-sex couples. The state also bars any recognition of same-sex marriages or civil unions entered into in other states...

...“This is one America. It’s time for the freedom to marry to come to the South,” said Greg Nevins of Lambda Legal.“We do not want a country divided by unfairness and discrimination. Same-sex couples are in loving, committed relationships in every region of our nation and should be treated the same way, whether they live in Maine or Virginia.”

"MOSCOW – Russia’s minister of sports, Vitaly L. Mutko, said on Thursday that foreign athletes traveling to Russia for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi would be expected obey a new Russian law banning “homosexual propaganda” or face criminal prosecution.

In comments made to the state news agency R-Sport, Mutko said gay athletes were welcome to attend the Games, but insisted that under the new law no athlete or visitor could advocate a “nontraditional” sexual orientation.

The statement seemed sure to further ignite criticism of the law, which has already become a point of contention surrounding the Games, with some calls for a boycott. A series of legislation and statements by the church and political officials about the law have been denounced as homophobic."

I would like to do a little reading and say more about this later, but my first reaction to your question was "fear".
America is changing and sometimes when change comes too fast certain groups can feel threatened.
Our demographics are changing. The dominance of traditional "white culture" is being challenged.
Social norms are changing with the empowerment of minorities and women and the advancement of marriage equality.
We've just gone through a major economic realignment too and that generated a lot of fear and frustration. People desperate to find somewhere to place the blame went looking for their scapegoats and came up with some very inventive ways to support arguments that otherwise defy reason.
Seems like a lot of this is coming from the far right of the political, religious and social spectrum too. Maybe that's because they see their traditional place in society and the influence of their moral directives being questioned.
Like I said, I'm going to do a little reading and come back to this. Our society is consumed with one conspiracy theory after another right now and even though some of them may have a basis in reality, most seem to be based on nothing more than fear of change and the unknown results of that change.
Interesting subject.
So Jax what have you been able to find out on any of this?

I have a serious question to ask each of you. When it comes to some of these conspiracy theories do we just dismiss them outright because they are too outrageous to believe? Or do we do it because it's to scary to take the chance of finding out that they may be true?
I'm very interested in hearing the answers.

People dismiss conspiracy theories that go against their beliefs. Left wingers believe in rightwing conspiracies and right wingers believe in leftwing conspiracies and those with common sense believe in both.

Yesterday the Olympic committee was saying that they had assurances that the laws wouldn't be applied to athletes or people visiting the Olympic games like it would be okay to ignore the persecution of gay people right outside the Olympic Village as long as it didn't impact the games directly.

Civil rights activists around the world said "yeah right, and so what".

I even saw a headline in one major publication that called their statements by the Olympic Committee and NBC "limp d*cked" and, language aside, I agree.

If they decide to send a team, donors should cut off the money supply to our team and NBC AND THERE ADVERTIZERS should be facing a boycott if they air the games.

This is serious. Russia has become a killing zone for young gay and lesbian people and both the church and the government have put there seal of approval on it.

This controversy is just getting started.

OH...btw...for anybody here that drinks. Boycott Russian Vodka!
