Hi, I was down in GTMO from 2008-2010 while I was in the Navy stationed with JTF doing detention operations. The Island itself is beautiful with tons of beaches and things to do like brand new softball fields, shopping, nightlife, etc. The living quarters you stay in depend on what unit you are in. The Navy and Army JTF mostly stayed in townhomes (3-4 bedroom attached houses with patios, 2 bathrooms, etc) and other stayed in Cuzco barracks (single-bedroom 12x12 with a bed, sink and shared bathroom). There are a bunch more residential areas (houses, condos) on the apartment but I cannot give much info on those. Like I said, it very much depends on your unit.

As far as work is concerned, if you are working JTF, there is a ton of different things you could end up doing. If you work the camps, it can get hot during the day. You are basically babysitting these guys and I am sure MUCH has changed since I left almost two years ago. It's one of those things that's hard to get used to and you will have a lot of fun on your offtime. Times will suck every once in a while but you just have to suck it up ya know? Good luck if you get approved!

JTF=Joint Task Force
No one stationed in GTMO is allowed to leave the base as far as I know.
