Science can also answer the question of these fools.

"Psychologists call this reaction belief perseverance: maintaining your original opinions in the face of overwhelming data that contradicts your beliefs. Everyone does it, but we are especially vulnerable when invalidated beliefs form a key part of how we narrate our lives. Researchers have found that stereotypes, religious faiths and even our self-concept are especially vulnerable to belief perseverance."

Basically, they are committed to a 'belief system' and cannot take the loss of status that would go with admitting error.

Another interesting note on the issue is this one.

The rise of the 'moral divide' is one of rigid rejection of other viewpoints, and the viewpoint of seeing the opposition as 'evil'. One cannot 'compromise with evil' so we end up in a frozen state of opposing cultures.

Here's what Bill Nye has to say about Representative Paul "Lies From the Pit of Hell" Broun:

Wonder what he'd say about Senator Todd "Rape Doesn't Cause Pregnancy" Akin?

And am I the only one wondering if these men were the product of more-than-kissin' cousins?

There is an online petition out to have this guy removed from the commission. I'm not totally sure how successful online petitions usually are, but hey it doesn't hurt to throw in a signature.

The ongoing hyperbole and attacks on those holding religious beliefs sounds more like a purge in the old Soviet Union.

This one at least is certainly no hyperbole. Having an anti-science candidate on the /House Science Committee/ is like having an anti-deist as your pastor. Except that you can just stop going to that church; myself, I would prefer not to have to flee the country just for competent governance.

This isn't even getting into the problem of separating church and state. Hopefully he's just using the Bible as an /ethical/ handbook and not considering trying to implement literal biblical laws and policies, but seeing what he thinks of science makes that incredibly unlikely, never mind that he's probably getting a billion things wrong in his interpretation of his handbook. I really wish people like this would quit killing religion.

You can't be,a physician and 'anti science'. It is possble to be a physician or a scientist and be a creationist. It escapes me as to how that happens, but it does.

Being a creationist doesn't stop you from evaluating whether or not there is sufficient science to make public policy about climate change any more than it would change your ability to diagnose cancer.

Religion and beliefs are strange bedfellows of science but occur more often than you are probably aware of and have been intertwined in philosphy from the beginning.

If he was just a creationist, it would be worrying, but possibly not quite enough for me to be calling for his being booted off the committee. But from his statements, it's very difficult to get around the implication that Broun's ideal 'science' is 'open the Bible.' That is very double plus ungood for anybody that is expected to make policy decisions affecting America's scientific institutions.

Why even did he include embryology in there...? I was not even aware that it was controversial, even among the crazies.

I am aware that his education is probably slightly dated--he must have earned his degrees in, what, the 70s?--but even that doesn't excuse this kind of declaration. The point of an elected official isn't to be an expert in everything. It is to know what experts to trust for advice on the issues. If he can't listen to the very people he's supposed to be governing, then he is unfit to be governing them in the first place. Broun simply /does not/ belong on any commission dealing with science, ever.

The article doesn't quite do Broun justice. To really appreciate his scientific prowess, watch him in his element...which appears to be deer:
