for one thing, i live in the smallest house in my entire city, AND i havent used my A/C YET this summer. i am forced to drive a pickup truck for my profession, but its a small one. i turn my lights off religiously. i recycle my metal. the sun shines long enough in kansas to heat and light your entire home and then some. there are new breakthroughs in solar power cells every day. too bad that MOST of these companies are based in other countries, since the united states cares more about oil than its people.

To marie,

I think I should bring this to your attention.

I read the post rom Tom in Overland Park.

FYI, Tom in Overland Park is not Tom D. in Overland Park.
Thought I should clear that up.

We've been getting along well, and I wouldn't want to change that.

Are you stupid? I bet you are not. So when are you going to start cashing in on a wide open market. Start caring for USA people and produce solar. Obviously you will be a millionaire in very short order. All you have to do is care about the people of the USA as you say.

Thanks for clearing that up. I'm glad and grateful to know, for your sake and mine. This other Tom however, seems I've upset him somehow. I must have left some gridmarks behind me. I got nothin against grids, I'd just like to be a little more independent, that's all.

i care about americans more than most. ive been building homes for americans to raise their families for over 20 years. BUT , the federal government has been "illegally" taxing my "income" the entire time. ive paid over $100,000 in "income taxes". if i had these monies back, you can bet i would start -up a solar power company. but im considering a political position, to do just that. abolish "income" taxes, get rid of illegal immigrants, lower wages for political figures. put a cap on the amount of shares a political figure can own in any company, to avoid another halliburton scandal. as you may know, many senators and congressmen have stock in halliburton, and stand to become even wealthier since the government has even paid for halliburtons services, even AFTER they found out that the taxpayers and government were defrauded by this company. so, in answer to your question, yes, i am a smart person, a fair person, and i CANNOT be bribed or taunted with money. i am a miser, and with a little work, and my help, the federal government will become a miser as well.

news flash for ya. 80% of the power made from these plants will go to colorado, NOT kansas. but kansans will reap the benefits of the by-products from these plants. birth-defects, breathing issues, cancers etc etc etc. oh, i almost forgot, they will also pay HIGHER prices for electricity to offset the costs of building these plants. my suggestion for you is to tear up your voter registration card and let intelligent people vote on this subject.

Wind and solar can be alternatives, but in Kansas the wind doesn't always blow, and the sun doesn't always shine.
i beg to differ. ive been working outside in kansas for 20 years, and the sun DOES shine a lot, and when it doesnt shine, the wind DOES blow. it doesnt matter how "clean" these plants burn, the price of coal has doubled in the last 6 months. that means the price of electricity will go up as well. weve already been told that utility bills will climb by at least 20% this fall. gas AND electric. if we all got "off-the-grid" there will be no more blackouts, and kcpl will go out of business. the loss of a few thousand jobs is insignificant compared to saving millions of us from going broke to fuel our cars and homes. after all millions of construction workers have lost their jobs to "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS", and gained NOTHING in return.

I maintain that the wind doesn't always blow and the sun doesn't always shine. I've been working outside for quite awile myself. I know it's true. For now, wind and solar are not primary energy sources here 24/7/365.

Nuclear is. By the time the next generation of nuclear power plants are through their working cycle, perhaps wind and solar can take its' place. Until then, they're best suited as a supplimentary source of power.

oh yeah , lets build these power plants. after all only 85% of the electricity will go to colorado, and the price of coal has doubled in the last year. plus, the waste produced by these plants, will fall on kansans and their families. then, the everyones utility bills will increase by 40% to cover the costs of building these plants. they are already going up by 20% this fall. why not build solar power cells instead?? look at all the flat-roofed buildings that are now black in color. this color absorbs heat and a roof like this is 20-30 degrees hotter than a roof covered in plants or painted white. school roofs should be covered by solar cells, to lower electric bills, and to pay the offset to the teachers. ALL government buildings should be solar powered. look at the FED-EX hub building, its solar powered and free sunlight runs the ENTIRE plant. no coal emissions come from buildings like this. if more buildings were solar powered, then the price of coal will come down and in-turn, lower electric bills of everyone else on the grid. with solar powered buildings , we can also have plug-ins in the parking lots to re-chargeall the electric cars coming out in the future. clean power= lower greenhouse gasses, lower bills etc. in case you cant tell, im against these power plants, and so is sebitchlius, ever since i emailed her(multiple times) and let her know you ignorant this expensive project was. so, she stole my idea, as long as its a good idea, who cares where it came from.(truman)
85% to CO sounds good. They can pay the ROI and the taxes and Kansans can get the benefit. Besides that they have been stealing our water for so long the Arkansas river has dried up!

um, excuse me, but i lived in kansas for 30 years, and have NEVER benefitted from a power company that taxes others. have you?? i want to know HOW these power plants will benefit kansans. is kcpl sending checks out to homeowners across the state?? are they lowering taxes for kansans??? one thing is true, these plants WILL benefit a FEW kansans, like, the people that OWN kcpl, and their families. whats that?, about 20 people??? everyones electric bill WILL go UP. GUARANTEED!! it will cost hundreds of millions to build these plants, because, state and federal officials hire VERY COSTLY construction companies to build them. after all, have you ever seen what goes into "remodeling" a military base?? i HAVE, FIRST HAND!! millions are spent and then they are TORN DOWN!!! for example FT.leonard wood(MO), and FT riley(ks). they use $100/gal paint.$10 sq ft corian. this is a FACT!!! i was there, i KNOW!!! they have $30per hour guys, watering lawns there, BY HAND. a sprinkler cost $4.the men doing the actual work, are from all across the country(not many are kansans. HUGE WASTE. think it will be different on these power plants??? THINK AGAIN! the military spends $150 million a MONTH just for fuel in iraq alone. they fly generals in helicopters 12 miles,to the white house from surrounding bases, INSTEAD of driving a car. this costs around $8,500 per trip. I KNOW, again, FIRST HAND!!! i personally painted my barracks(with surplus WWII paint)real CHEAPLY, only to have the entire base torn down within 5 years.

Calm Down! Have another drink!

First off, KCPL is owned by stock holders. Yes they want a return on their investment. But look at the stock price. It's not making money hand over fist. It is first, a utility. It is designed to be self-supporting, with any profits going to the stock holder.

I have no idea who will own or does own the proposed coal fired plants that exist or are coming. Nor do I know who owns the Wolf Creek plant. They are designed to generate electricity and sell it. They are not built by Joe's Electric.

Second...when a power plant generates electricity that is sold in another state, there is a markup. it will be more expensive. Any surplus will be thrown into the grid here. If more is necessary more will be generated...to a point.

Any profit will not be split between home owners, but between the stock holders. That is the way capitalism works.

As for $100 per gallon paint,$600 hammers,$800 dollar toilet seats, I've seen the stories. I've never heard of $600 dollar hammers building a power plant, nor have I ever heard how much a contractor gets paid to paint one. I'm sure its much more than the 8 bucks an hour my kid makes flippin burgers part time, but I doubt that it's from a 100 dollar bucket of paint.

My point...a new coal fired power plant is desireable over the old one, much cleaner. A new nuclear plant would be cleaner still, and less polluting.

As much as we may wish, windmills and solar cells are not sufficient YET, to be a primary source of power. Not when everyone wants to plug in a car on top of everything else.

For now, they are good for supplimental power. By the time a nuclear plant would serve it's cycle, perhaps wind and solar could provide sufficient megawatts to power the things that need power.

An entire building is not an entire city, county, state. I don't want to see another coal plant. I'm more pro-nuclear power generation...at least until the other alternates are perfected.

NO, I see plant life spewing Oxygen after taking in CO2 to complete this NATURAL process.
When nature is a mystery, the ignorant fools like GWrs demonize it.
