Many Arctic land areas are in the minus mid 30degC., none in the minus forty degC region, possibly because of Arctic cold being flushed to the south, now causing snows on the U.S. east coast.
The sun has been unseen from the North Pole for under 5 months. Arctic Ocean warmth is & will continue to keep Arctic sea ice thinner through the coming winter & even spring. Arctic sea ice VOLUME loss is a better measure of overall Arctic biosphere warming, than sea ice area loss, tho it's data is harder to determine. Since the 1980's, the loss of Arctic sea ice VOLUME could only be seen in decadal periods of time. However, the rate of Arctic sea ice VOLUME loss has so greatly increased, sea ice VOLUME loss, now can be seen YEARLY! As of January 2013, Arctic sea ice VOLUME is ~11% lower than that of January 2012, continuing the steady VOLUME decline since the 80's, but now, at an astoundingly greater rate. Average Arctic sea ice VOLUME during January for the period 1980-89, was ~23+ thousand cubic kilometers. Present January 2013 sea ice VOLUME is 13,200 cubic kilometers. The Arctic sea ice loss has been an uncontrolled plummet, desired by unscientific AGW deniers, who mostly have no or little mathematical or science background.

Presently, Arctic sea ice extent is 13,638,281 km2 (February 7, 2013), the day's gain, Hawaii-sized. At this point, the Arctic sea ice has recovered a bit more than the area of the entire United States, since its sea ice area low in September, 2012, roughly normal. However, indications are that Arctic sea ice THICKNESS is as much as 11% LESS than any previous recorded year, OR possibly as little as 9-10% LESS. Arctic temperature above the 80th parallel, is -26degC. At the time of the coldest Arctic temperatures of the year, numerous land regions are in the mid to deep minus 30's degC.
Past details of Arctic Ice Pack near Chief Joseph Land: widely encircled by Arctic Ice Pack, due to 24/7 hours of darkness & a shifting but long enduring vortex, that moved cold Arctic sea water southward to the islands. Lately, there has been a long enduring very large vortex under the Arctic Ice Pack for 2(?) months, rotating clock-wise.
Chief Joseph's Land, reconnecting to the Arctic Ice Pack for the second time, is strongly encircled, & extended toward Svalbard & connecting to its northern & eastern coasts.
A detail noted ~5(?) months ago, was a raggy taggy developing edge along a part of the semi-circle Ice Pack, possibly NOT coincidental with the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS (plus?) OF SQUARE KILOMETERS, of waters north of Alaska & Siberia that are VASTLY CLEAR. Might the raggy taggy edge indicate huge turbulence & currents in this largest(ever recorded?) ice-free Arctic ocean, & resulting southerly-directed heat stratified Arctic waters? I wonder if there might develop more raggy taggy edging, enough to form a swirl pattern?
Days later, near the raggy taggy Ice Pack, 3 tiny pixel ice floes(arced?) developed, separated from the Arctic ice pack toward southerly directions. A day later, the number of ice floes increased to 8 & indeed they formed an ARC. Pretty sure they represent a large scale vortex in open Arctic water!
Further data, showed that the vortex was true!
The sun has been unseen from the North Pole for almost 5 months & presently anywhere above the 75th deg. parallel, shrouding the Arctic with darkness for a good portion of the year! The sun shows motion to the north, now higher in the noon-time sky by 8 arcdeg(16 sun diameters AND PRESENTLY INCREASING AT MORE THAN HALF A SUN DIAMETER PER DAY) from its farthest yearly position to the south, due to the tilt of the Earth & present orbital position!

Average Arctic sea ice VOLUME for February 1, for the period 1980-89, was ~26,300 cubic kilometers. Present February 1, 2013 sea ice VOLUME is 16,800 cubic kilometers.

Tho both Arctic sea ice Volume quantities for February 1st changed, the difference between the two quantities is the same as for January 1st quantities between average 1980's & 2013.

Berkeley Earth has just released analysis of land-surface temperature records going back 250 years, about 100 years further than previous studies. The analysis shows that the rise in average world land temperature globe is approximately 1.5 degrees C in the past 250 years, and about 0.9 degrees in the past 50 years.

Berkeley Earth also has carefully studied issues raised by skeptics, such as possible biases from urban heating, data selection, poor station quality, and data adjustment. We have demonstrated that these do not unduly bias the results.

Many of the changes in land-surface temperature can be explained by a combination of volcanoes and a proxy for human greenhouse gas emissions. Solar variation does not seem to impact the temperature trend.

If you've been worrying that recent storms are linked to climate change, you're right on the mark, according to climate experts such as Michael Mann.

Mann explains that we're seeing bigger storms with more snow because of global warming, and compared Nemo and Superstorm Sandy "to a basketball slam-dunk with a lower net." "If you take the basketball court and raise it a foot, you're going to see more slam-dunks," said Mann to HuffPo's Lynne Peeple's.

Michael Oppenheimer, a climate expert at Princeton, agrees. "Storms like this tend to be heavier than they used to be," he told HuffPo. "That's a fact."
In weather terms, that's because warmer temperatures and a moister atmosphere make snowstorms heavier. What we've seen recently is a trend for storms that occur at just-below-freezing temperatures, which means bigger snowfall. "In the past, temperatures at this time of year would have been a lot below freezing," making it too cold for heavy snowfall, said Kevin Trenberth of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado. "Sea surface temperatures are about two degrees Fahrenheit warmer than they were before 1980, raising the potential for a big snow by about 10 percent," according to HuffPo.

Presently, Arctic sea ice extent is 13,762,344 km2 (February 10, 2013), the day's gain, W. Virginia-sized. At this point, the Arctic sea ice has recovered a bit more than the area of the entire United States, since its sea ice area low in September, 2012, roughly normal.. Arctic temperature above the 80th parallel, raised to -25degC. At the time of the coldest average Arctic temperatures of the year, numerous land regions are in the mid to deep minus 30's degC, with one Siberian temperature dropping to -45degC(-49degF).

The sun has been unseen from the North Pole for almost 5 months & presently anywhere above the 76th deg. parallel, shrouding the Arctic with darkness for a good portion of the year! The sun shows motion to the north, now higher in the noon-time sky by almost 9 arcdeg(18 sun diameters AND PRESENTLY INCREASING AT MORE THAN HALF A SUN DIAMETER PER DAY) from its farthest yearly position to the south, due to the tilt of the Earth & present orbital position!

The sun has been unseen from the North Pole for not quite 5 months. However, indications are that Arctic sea ice THICKNESS is as little as 11% LESS or as great as 9-10% LESS than any previous recorded year,.
