Scientists blame global warming for Antarctica ice shelf collapse

There are 130 comments on the www.earthtimes.org story from Mar 26, 2008, titled Scientists blame global warming for Antarctica ice shelf collapse. In it, www.earthtimes.org reports that:

Scientists Tuesday are blaming global warming for the collapse of a giant slab off Antarctica's Wilkins Ice Shelf. Looking at NASA satellite images a glaciologist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) at the University of Colorado at Boulder noticed part of the Wilkins ice shelf disintegrating on February 28, with a large iceberg measuring 41 kilometres by 2.4 kilometres fell from the south-western front of the ice shelf.

Clearly, this event in Antarctica has nothing to do with global warming as it is only 4% of the overall shelf in Antarctica where temperature decreased during the recent years causing more ice to be created.
Nevertheless, the scientists hurried to calm down the world saying that they are not concerned about a rise in sea level from the small ice shelf collapse in Antarctica.
However, left wing liberal socialists politicians like Mike Bloomberg the Mayor of NY hurried to call for tax increase and new congestion tolls based on the ice self collapse for the good of the politicians that will spend the money on their re-election efforts.

I wonder if the scientists take into affect the fact that as the ice floe is growing, the edge of the floe breaks off at structural failure points? If the edges did not break, we would have to endure the ice age from years ago. The poor seals and penguins wouldn't have anywherer to play as they float about the oceans.

Global warming is all rubbish! What happened to our Earth history - The Ice Age? Scientists in this world would have to go to schools and learn about The Ice Age. The Earth history should tell them about it. Have no doubt about it!

Hopefully, this will be an example of the dying cries of the Phony man made Global Warming Scam. Temperatures in the Antarctic were recorded Colder than normal this past year. However, the Easy Believing Liberals will cling as long as possible to their false beliefs.

Read the whole piece - The summer season is almost over and they don't expect to see more of this.
This is a peninsula that sticks out into the ocean, subject to cyclical ocean current shifts. A change in those currents could just as easily create a new peninsula or re-generate this one.

Some old ice broke off the edge as it was being pushed out to sea. If anyone doubts that something like this happen in the past ask any number of people who have survived Titanic like run in's with sea ice.

Clearly you are ignorant on the science. While winter ice-pack has increased this is because of lower salinity from ice-sheet melt making it easier to freeze at higher temperature.

No similar change in summer ice-pack extent has been observed which belies the claim of lower temperatures causing the ice-pack increase even if the meteorology didn't continue to show warming.

And like the Larsen B event, the cause is a small rise in temperature outside of the polar vortex ( i.e. the edges and the Antarctic Penninsula ) which has pushed the temperature above freezing in the summer, causing water to penetrate cracks and push ice-shelves apart.

It is a mechanism first reported in the Larsen B breakup and probably will continue to decrease the ice-shelf extent.

Ancient maps indicated that Antartica was once
green with trees, foliage.
Maybe we'll see it again?

Nope. Global warming is from mainstream scientists, not the media. You have to recognise who is authoritative and who is publishing articles on 'starships' and 'ice ages' and other 'science fantasy' with very little connection to the science community.

Atta boy Jones. The best story was missed. You see, the penguins were waiting for the chunk of ice to fall off so they could body surf. The one out front yelled, "Last one to Tierra del Fuego is a poop head."

Haven't you heard, we're not allowed to call it global warming any more, it's now 'climate change'.

Some pretty pictures of the event can be seen here http://nsidc.org/news/press/20080325_Wilkins....
Rather impressive. If the ice is melting, must mean that somehow it's getting warmer down there.

You are so biased it hurts.
IT WAS A PENINSULA!!!!
Not part of the "ice pack".
Subject to the cyclical changing ocean currents...
I forgot - you deny the exisitence of them, since other scientists have said these changing current could be one of the most significant causes of changes to the shape of the ice.
Volcanic activity under the ocean and changing surface winds are considered the most significant and most likely cause of these current shifts.

I just had to reply to lesshype. Let me just pose this one question to you; Where's your baseline data? Since you "scientist" believe the earth is millions of years old, how do you know we're not in a one hundred, two hundred, three hundred, or even thousand year warming cycle?

Did you know that the USFS did a study on rain fall in the Sierra Nevada Range and found that what they thought was "normal" rainfall was actually an abundance of rain fall when comparing one hundred of weather records with three hundred years of tree ring growth?
