House Quashes Amendment to Study Coal Dust Impacts
Oregon Democratic Congressman Peter DeFazio tried to add an amendment requiring a study of the impacts of transporting coal by rail to the coal bill which passed the U-S House of Representatives Friday.

Most of these long trains transporting coal to China will pass through the center of Spokane. It's a matter of real concern, although coal dust is only one of many costs foisted on the locals without compensation or jobs. Noise, exhaust, dust, the need to build $20 million overpasses to provide access to the city's hospitals...it's all on us. And that's before we get to the climate damage and mercury pollution that comes back our way after the coal is burned. Such a deal.
