Moral arguments are always a weak straw in any debate. And few moral authorities really comment on 'the tragedy of the commons' anyway. The issue is more of ethics than morals. What is the 'duty' of the present generation to the next one in terms of what they leave. And the answer is, they leave problems and opportunities that they missed.
So the issue really is a PRACTICAL one of what sort of sustainability we want to secure OUR lives and futures. And the answer seems to be 'let the rich choose for us' so far. And they have. At public expense and to no great improvement, since what benefits the power brokers rarely benefits the public.
Now we get to the real issue which is, can we 'regreen' the grass roots and get some control over the political system as a democratic institution answerable to the public and with a duty to avoid 'special interests'.
