I remember late afternoon on 9/11 when my neighbor called me and said we could organize car pools to the mall and grocery store.
My sister had gone up to the attic to get down my grandmother's journals on WW2 which was a daily entry on what they did to conserve and be self reliant.
I was so proud in all of the sadness that we had come together and everybody I know was just literally practically falling all over themselves wanting to the best for our country.
The first couple of days I remember the great conversations we had thinking of things we could do to improve the country, honor the memories of those who had died, and secure our generation,'step up to the plate,'
We watched Bush's speech fulling expecting that we would be called upon to do great things like our grandparents had when attacked.
Honest to goodness, you could have knocked me over with a feather when the president said 'Shop and Fly or the Terrorists Will Win.'
IMHO, I think the greatest opportunity in my lifetime was missed to become a better, more self reliant, energy independent, people working for a better greater thing than themselves, and helping out global warming also for the next generation and my country.
I know how crazy it sounds now, but my family, neighbors, friends, no one was liberal or conservative, repub or dem, religious or not, or elite or not, or red or blue or anything but American.
I was so proud then. Although I had always loved my family, liked my friends, respected my neighbors and we had had and shared good times.. I was so impressed with how thoughtful, intelligent, and innovative, and creative, and determined they were.
