Doug, I listen to you every morning on the way to work. Your biggest problem is that you MAKE TOO MUCH SENSE. LOL. If something makes sense, no one wants to do it. I used to be a pretty ardent tree-hugger ... until I took some environmental law classes (and administrative law classes) in law school. It was enough to show that more than a majority of the environmental laws we have in place do absolutely nothing to protect what they are supposed to protect. In fact, I would say that most of are laws are exactly like that. Feel good laws. Like the hands-free one that just went into effect. The only thing they do is prevent growth of businesses, prevent the creation of jobs, and make lots of money for scummy lawyers to sue over these stupid things.
Does everybody realize that the place we need to drill in ANWR is like a dot on the map compared to all of ANWR and compared to all of Alaska? Someone described ANWR as being a bit bigger than the state if Indiana, but the actual drilling spot is like the size of an Indianapolis sports arena (sorry forgot the name of it). And have you seen pictures of that area - not so "pretty" actually. But pretty or not pretty should not be the way we make decisions anyway.
We need to be taking a realistic approach to the problem that our leaders have done nothing about for the last 30 to 40 years. This is where partisanship is going to hurt Americans and people on both sides. People from blue and red states need to just come to that realization - the polarization means NOTHING GETS DONE. NOTHING AT ALL. I would rather have something get done, even if it means compromising on some things, then nothing at all and having our economy collapse and be beholden to the scummy terrorists for their oil. A new source of energy cannot be pulled out of our butts. We need to work on that, but in the mean time it would be nice for us regular Americans not to go bankrupt trying to get to work. And believe me, if L.A. had a decent public transportation system (maybe we should be working harder on that, Arnold? Viva La Raza?) I would use it. But it doesn't, so I HAVE to drive. I have a Hybrid Highlander, which made sense 2 years ago when we bought it (because of the rising prices and the Suburban was killing us). But now it's pointless. It's still $60 to fill the tank every week, and my husband's small Saturn is at least $45.00! We both drive 35 to 40 miles one way to work, 5 days a week.
And we're told to "drive less". Well, how can we do that, smarty pants? I'm tired of being blamed for "loving" my car when I live in a city that sold itself out to the tire and oil companies in the 1930s, thereby creating the lovely freeway system we have today and no decent public transportation. From the West Side of L.A. to downtown, my father-in-law had to take like 4 or 5 different buses to get to jury duty. RIDICULOUS!
So Doug, keep up the good work, keep plugging away and maybe, just maybe, we can wake our so-called leaders up and get a solution.
Cheers.

Bureaucratic Mess

"The only thing they do is prevent growth of businesses, prevent the creation of jobs, and make lots of money for scummy lawyers to sue over these stupid things."
Want to know more about scummy lawyers and feel good laws that do little but enrich them? Read about the abuses of the Americans With Disabilities Act. It's costing businesses and taxpayers billions every year. Much of the money is wasted on fraudulent lawsuits. Much of it is wasted on stuff like an elevator to a second floor and other expensive and unreasonable building codes and the bureaucracy to enforce them.

1. "Because drilling will not result in an instantaneous reduction in gas prices, we shouldn't do it." Arnold should know that that argument is weak at best.
2. You should have mentioned the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, Doug.
3. "smoke contributes to global warming" -- clever.
4. Fact that state budget is a disaster is not relevant.

alternative energy sources are a great thing to promote, but they arent going to be here anytime soon. the oil off our coasts and in alaska wont be here anytime soon either. BUT if we start now, in 10 years when the oil is finally being produced we can buy back our country from the chinese and arabs. The Democrats would rather we suffer as they shut down coal, oil, and anything else that we can develop because "it contributes to global warming" totally oblivious to the fact that China and India are contaminating the environment at an ever increasing rate no matter what we do. I would much rather start drilling now to ensure that I have a backup plan later when the democrats shut down biofuels for contaminating the environment, windpower for killing too many birds, wavepower for killing fish and solar for urban blight. I might be wrong about biofuels, they have caused the dramatic increase in food costs so the democrats will probably pass more laws to increase the amount of corn based ethanol required which will decrease the amount of corn based food available, we are too fat anyway).

Corn based ethanol is a mistake and should not be promoted by our government for many reasons.

True corn based ethanol is a huge mistake is driving up food prices among along with contributing to global warming. China and India are contaminating the world at an alarming rate and their pollution is blowing our way and let's not forget that two volcanoes just went off not long ago which also has contributed to global warning. Some scientists believe now that volcanoes going off in the past contributed to the mini ice age and then the Black Death in Europe -- interesting concept think it was on the Discovery Channel about a month or 2 ago.

Remove the Ban on drilling, suspend all regulations for five years to seed up process! We have been pumping oil safetlynfor forty years off our coast! Keep our money in America, drill, drill, drill. When thr Ban is dropped the Arabs will do their prices and increase the supply! The Democrats are supporting the Arabs not Americans the people who they used to represent! Why do we need them!?!

Reality Check
|
I'm wondering if these editorials get edited to tone them down, compared to radio rants? I think this simplifies the dangers of off-shore oil drilling, although it's true that some "environmentalists" are more dogmatic than reasonable -- reacting to the oil industry's greed. Arnold isn't "spineless" for trying to study the situation -- it would be irresponsible to rush in.
McIntyre's rants about Jamiel's Law show such ignorance of "how sausage is made" and WHO is responsible for making it, along with crude diatribes where they don't belong, that I take anything he says with a huge, huge grain of salt. It was NOT the LAPD. but the Sheriff's Dept. AND DA Cooley's people, who are in charge of the County Prisons from which Espinoza was released "on his own recognizance" to kill Jamiel Shaw. Espinoza had been a "guest" there many times, and it was the DA's JOB, being in charge of felonies, and Sheriff' BACA's, being in charge of prisons, to identify Espinoza as a gangbanger.
The DA has hundreds of investigators who are SUPPOSED to do this, and work with Baca to develop a county-wide database, but they don't. They just plea-bargain out the criminals. Espiniza JUST TOLD THEM HE WAS A CITIZEN AND THEY BELIEVED HIM, NO CHECKS!!! The DA's office is just plain incompetent -- they released from prison a husband who was there for threatening to kill his wife, so she had a restraining order on him AND a legal commitment to notify her if he was released. The DA's office "overlooked" that and released the husband without telling her so he killed her, right before the recent elections -- but Cooley hid this fact until the week later, claiming he's "had a bad cold" and didn't get around to it.
If McIntyre wanted to do more than rant at the wrong people, he'd talk about the FACTS AND URGE PEOPLE TO PROTEST TO THE DA. Since that won't protect more Bolognas in San Francisco or others elsewhere, this should really be brought to bear on the STATE, Assembly and Governor. But no, he goes after those he loves to hate, badmouthing them in hateful and stupid ways, and so they ignore him, nothing useful can get done. But hey, it's good RATINGS.
