Boy: I had to 'go' in front of class

There are 15 comments on the hosted.ap.org story from Apr 28, 2007, titled Boy: I had to 'go' in front of class. In it, hosted.ap.org reports that:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- A middle school teacher instructed an eighth grader to urinate in a bottle in class instead of allowing him go to the bathroom, the boy and his mother said Friday. Thirty-one classmates heard Michael Patterson, 14, relieve himself into an empty Gatorade bottle in a corner, they said. "He said, 'Do what you got to do,'" the boy recalled of Tuesday's exchange. "I said, 'I've got a bottle,' and he said, 'Go in the corner.' So I just handled my business." When he was finished, Michael said, his science teacher told him to go to the restroom to wash his hands and dispose of the bottle. "It was really, really embarrassing," Michael said. "It's still embarrassing." The boy's mother and the local chapter of the NAACP are demanding that the district fire the teacher at Charles M. Goethe Middle School if he does not resign. The boy is black, and Kelly Jacko, his mother, said the teacher is white."That man owes us an apology," said Jacko said. "I don't think he should teach. He had to know this was not appropriate behavior." A school district spokesman said officials are interviewing the teacher and other students. The mother disclosed the teacher's name, but district spokesman Marcus Walton would not confirm it.

This story just shows you how the will take a story like this and make it a case of race. Why is the NAACP getting into this? If the teacher was also black would they have done anything?

Stupid should not be a teacher. Race had nothing to do with it. NAACP is now re-defined to black on black issues. They may want to look at rap music.

I agree the teacher did not do the right thing. But they point out that the boy is black and the teacher is white. What has this have to do with the probem?

Lets say the teacher was black and the student was white. Would this story even be written in the fashion that is was?

Would they have even mention the race part of it? Would the NAACP run on this story if the boy had been white?

Every time someone mentions the race of the victim being black there some white person ready to change the focus by rushing to an abtract comparison. After 400-years of systemic racism and class war--don't you see a pattern developing? Or is the aculturation of racism so ingrain that even morality and justice is now abtract? Sadism is popular among the majority until it happens to them...

Rap Music is now the scapgoat for every evil this country has perpetrated within the cultures of America, yet nothing is mentioned about the multi-billions consumed by International Pornography by the American public. And, what about the glorification of the Italian Godfathers and the International Drug trade whos profits over many years fuels a separate underground economy in the trillions. What has Rap Music done is capitalize on a moral backruptcy that is an indictment to the historical culture of exploition of our goood-ole Christian hypocracy: American! Oh, what happen to the Catholic Chruch an all those destroyed little boys and girls--Yah Rap Music is to blame?

What difference does it make what color the kid is? The boy had to go. The fact that the teacher made him do it in front of the class; then to add insult to injury have the kid take the bottle of urine to the bathroom and flush it. Why not let him go to the boy's room in the first place. Idiot!

Race remains a significant factor in society in general and education in particular. This teacher most likely would not have made the kind of decision he did if it were a White student. Its an attitude borne of arrogance, ignorance, indifference and intolerance of African Americans by society as a whole. Those who have endured racism and discrimination speak with a distinctive voice. This type of attitude is the norm of racial inequality in public schools and society. I wouldn't ask the NAACP or the ACLU to get involved. I would simply sue the individual teacher and the school for actions of the teacher and for allowing the type of environment that encourages, condones and perpetuates this type of bias.

I've been in teaching for about 7 years and diversity is being stressed in training. In my district I'd venture to guess that the incident would have been LESS likely to happen if the student were Black.

I guess the bottom line is, one way or another, we are NOT a color-blind society. Will we ever be?

The press did not point out that the teacher was white and the kid was black. The MOTHER did.

If the kid was black and the teacher was white, the race card would've been played just the same. People need to quit using race as the way out of everything.

As to my knowledge, there has never been a seriously racial-motivated incident involving student and teacher, in the 15+ years that I have lived in the same district served by Charles M. Goethe Middle School. It is a diverse learning center with diversly adjusted teachers.

Combine this with the story from a "good size" (possibly strong-minded) 14 year-old, and a situation that is "personal" not racial emerges. For some reason the boy had to go during class, the boy quoted the teacher as to say "do what you have to do", the boy (himself) chose to use the gatorade bottle rather than go to the restroom... why?

Because this started as a communication problem between teacher and student, and it's just now coming to the attention of the public. So if the media wants to "really" be of help, then they would do best in focusing on this problem, as opposed to something of irrelevance like say.. skin color or having to piss... sheesh!

If us Whites Blacks Browns Reds Tans Yellows Auburns and all other colors here on Earth were to realize that "it is not about race"(whatever that is), then sooner or later it won't be.

Why do they have to make it into a race issue. That's just stupid. And what the hell does rap have to do with it?
