Wouldn't it be funny if the great-grandkid / heir presumptive turned out to be queer!

Actually, it would be King and Prince Consort or Queen and Princess Consort.

The only way that it would be King and King or Queen and Queen is if we had a situation like King William III of Orange and Queen Mary II. Both had a claim to the throne of England. William III was the grandson of Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland, and so was Mary II. Both had claims to the throne, so both acted as coregent.

Actually the spouse of the King or Queen can be called King or Queen without a claim to the throne.

Remember the hubbub over whether Camilla would be called Queen when Chucky takes over as King?

I don't know who gets to decide, but I know they CAN be called Queen or King simply by being the spouse of the reigning monarch.

That's a whole other issue. You see, the way that the traditions are set up, the monarch's consort is a Queen if and only if the monarch is the King. If the monarch is a Queen, then her consort is known as Prince Consort.

Queen Elizabeth II's husband is not referred to as King Phillip, but rather Prince Phillip or Prince Consort Phillip.

However, her father, King George V's wife was Queen Mary.

So, by the logic of the tradition, the husband of a King would be known as Prince Consort since you cannot have two kings, and the wife of a Queen would be known as Princess Consort.

Parliament can change the traditions, as they did with Camilla or with Queen Elizabeth's great-grandchild, but it is unlikely that they will.

Wouldn't that be a Queen and Queen Consort?(The latter is what the late Queen Mother was.) I am not sure there can be a King consort for due to language sexism the word "king" implies sovereignty whereas the word "queen" does not.

In England, it has not happened except in the single case of the two co-reigning monarchs. Queen Victoria wanted Albert to be a king (he was her cousin and thus also an heir to the throne) but she did not get her way. The current Elizabeth's husband is called Prince Consort and I believe Queen Anne's husband was as well. The first queen Elizabeth didn't have a husband and her predecessor was in an unconsummated marriage to the King of Spain who was a king in his own right. William and Mary were not much of a couple as William was always gone fighting the French or screwing his little Dutch boyfriend, who happened to be Camilla's ancestor.
