The day has come when public restrooms should be built the same way residential bathrooms are built:
.
Private rooms with locks on the doors
.
The locks can be electronically set to fly open every 15 minutes so people won't stay too long

The people are so upset about mixed sexes in restrooms but do they realize that in Europe, men's rooms are frequently staffed by "dames pipi" or "Pipidamen?"

I'm thinking that some transgender protections already exist under gender discrimination laws and the Civil Rights Act. I wonder if that can be used to help a transgender person.

It goes even further than that in Scandinavia... there, bathrooms are either "sexed", so to speak, or simply unisex... and no one remarks either way. At the university in Aarhus, Denmark, a "restroom" (I don't understand that metaphor... who rests in a restroom?) is just a bathroom with toilet stalls, for anyone. In addition, in most of Europe, there is much more privacy in stalls... they are completely enclosed and of course the doors latch, in contrast to the military-style toilets we have in this country, where doors and walls are a couple of feet off the ground, at best. For a country so concerned with sexuality and modesty, I cannot understand why we have toilet stalls anyone can look into whether they want to or not.

Figures. Republicans always have their heads in the toilet. Why should anyone care where somebody else goes to the bathroom?

Fully enclosed unisex stalls complete with hand basins and proper doors are a good idea. Soemone should get cracking and design a more substantial seat (e.g. one that is U-shaped and drops below the rim of the bowl) but spring-loaded so it pops up when not in use, thus keeping it clean when the bowl doubles as a urinal. Either that or a separate room only for urinals.

In the present setup, where are intersex people supposed to go?(And they DO exist -- people who were born with the physical attributes of both genders and have no intention of changing.)

The public WC as we know it has not undergone a significant redesign in many decades, so it's about time someone comes up with an improved unisex paradigm.

I can tell some of our haters are NOT world travelers by their fear.

I will never forget the restroom at the Brussels train station. It had HUGE picture windows, one to the station, one to the street. The mens room and ladies rooms were separated by an open arch with one of those cleaning ladies, just standing there, waiting to roll her mop. No one was upset or horrified or anything. No one cared. This was over 20 years ago.

When will this country move out of the 19th century?

How about putting bidets in the stalls too? I cannot understand why the bidet, which is such a useful invention, never caught on in the US and Canada and why most people in North America don't even realize its primary purpose is exterior asshole cleaning and not vaginal douching.

Yes! If not in public toilets then definitely in homes. Maybe a toilet and bidet IN ONE -- i.e. a squirting stream of water at the press of a button?

They have that already. We stayed at a really nice hotel in Hawaii once and at first I had no idea what all those buttons and levers were, but sure enough, it had a warm water spray nozzle under the lid. where has THAT been all my life?

this really happened in 2007.in some aspects its un related in some it is. But recent comments from Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle have drawn protests from the area's gay population and spooked the city's tourism industry.

"He has demonized a group of people," said Waymon Hudson, a spokesman for UNITE Fort Lauderdale. "He should be held accountable for any hate crimes committed against gays."

The controversy started last month when Naugle, a Democrat, said the city needs to buy single-occupancy public toilets to "reduce homosexual sex in bathrooms." Naugle then opposed a plan to put a collection of gay and lesbian literature -- some including adult content -- in a public library. The library collection was approved anyway.
