Why can't somebody make a GOOD gay movie for a change ?

Just 2 regular guys that meet. But they're different. There's a huge culture clash because one guy's from Brooklyn and the other guy's from Queens. And the other huge problem they have is the guy from Brooklyn is a Presbyterian and the other guy's a Methodist.

Something interesting and complicated like that.

Why can't somebody do that ?!

I've been asking the same question for decades. Not exactly the plot you describe, but generally the same idea. I can only gather that people who make gay-themed movies are stuck in the mindset that we only want to look at pretty bodies and empty heads on the screen. The story line, to them, is inconsequential. And until we shrink back from the utterly useless crap that they provide, and reward anything that is in any way deeply relevant, they will provide what they have in the past. It is really in our hands, should we wish to take the initiative. But my guess is, for the most part, we won't.

Oh, you can't wait for it to come out on DVD so you can rent it. The fact that you took the time to comment really outed you!

Why would you expect gay-themed movies to be any better than the rest of the tripe Hollywood shovels at us? It's nice to imagine that, as a class, we're more discerning about what we subject our minds to. As more come out, however, I think it's increasingly clear that we're really just as hopeless as everyone else.

How many gay movies are out? How many producers would take a chance on making a gay movie knowing they'll probably lose money. Answer to both, none.
Check out Netflix. There are many great movies. And no, they aren't porn, so don't get all excited.

I don't need to check out anything. Less than 2% of movies are gay movies. That should tell you something.
The Gay/Lesbian Forum has probably 80% straight bigots constantly posting comments. THAT should tell you something.

Well, I was being tongue-in-cheek (sorta) with that post, but there was a movie made along those lines starring the great actor Paul Sorvino called "Mambo Italiano". And over the years, I've certainly known regular blue-collar guys who are gay.

We know the only ones posting about sex are straight. If they aren't posting what they dream gay people are doing behind closed doors, they are bragging about their own made up sex lives.

Or better, a movie in an alternate genre (comedy, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller or even animated) where one of main characters is "incidentally" gay (and does not die, get beat up, perpetrate murders, etc.). One I can recall that did this many years ago was a filmed version of a play, "Six Degrees of Separation", in which a very young Will Smith played a gay con artist. "I Love You, Philip Morris" which is also coincidentally about a gay con artist, is another example. But these are few and far between. More often, gays as major characters are usually in fluff marketed to the gay community or as "secondary" major characters, typically in romantic straight "date" movies. As for movies marketed specifically to the gay community, they need to find some alternate them material beyond coming out, dating, and sex.

One must remember however, that the gay mass market, at least in the US, is probably as dumb and uneducated as the general mass market.

And this is important you in what way? Don't like a gay themed movie, don't watch it. Don't like gay people, avoid them. Don't approve of gays marrying, then do't marry a gay person. Hope that simplifies your life for you.

I loved the Broken Hearts Club and Latter Days and a few, very few others. We do need some main stream gay movies that depict us as just people and not as outcasts and off the wall people. Most of my gay friends are like my straight friends...they just choose to have sex with the same gender!
