Out of the 10 films mentioned in the article, I saw 6 of them, and only liked 2 of those.

And HOW could they leave out "The Ritz" AND "Victor/Victoria" ?! Those are probably the BEST "gay" films made !:)

Is it just a meme anymore to dismiss Rocky Horror? It`s actually quite well made, both as a musical and as an homage to 50`s sci fi films. On the other hand, Cruising is a complete waste of celluloid.

A fairly rare short film called Vapors should be on this list as well:it`s a great little drama done on a shoestring.

What moron made this list?! This is pathetic! These are not gay films, they are films with very brief, pointless 'gay' scenes added for 'controversy' in an age when gay subject matter was controversial, and Friedkin's 2 films are garbage, 2 of his worst films, but then he isn't gay. A better choice for Schlesinger, the only openly gay, great director here (unless you count Van Sant, who is just another homophobic gay man and NOT a great director), would have been Sunday, Bloody Sunday.'Brokeback' and 'Philadelphis' are actually anti-gay films that make it a point to say that a heppy, gay couple can't exist.

What no "BirdCage" or "Mrs. Doutfire"? Both were great movies in my opinion, had solid story lines and worth watching.

Another movie that didn't make the list, but should have was "Prayers for Bobby".

How can they call some of these films "gay?"

"Cabaret" focuses on the character of Sally Bowles. It is not really a film about homosexuality.

"Midnight Cowboy" is about a straight guy who winds up selling his body to men in order to survive and his non-sexual male bonding with his would-be pimp.

Except for the ironic last line, "Some Like It Hot" (which is one of my favourites) is about cross-dressing as a disguise and not about gay people. One could have just as easily nominated "Tootsie", another terrific comedy but not gay.

"Rocky Horror" falls more into the category of camp than it does as a gay-storylined film. And I also don't see why he thinks it is bad. The movie is a lot of fun and has held up well for almost 40 years.

Futhermore, the author show his typically American narrowness by not mentioning films which broke ground in othe countries. "Taxi zum Klo", which is an absurdist yet realistic look at gay life in the days before the HIV crisis is a prefectly good example, akin to Kramer's "Faggots" (which I don't think was made into a film).

IMHO, "La Cage aux Folles" is a far superior movie to "Birdcage."

I would have also addes "Priscilla" to the list. It did not really break new ground, but it is a movie that is essentially about celebrating gay life as opposed to its problems.

Cruising with Al Pacino depicted the gay lifestyle perfectly. I remember the scene where Pacino gets fisted.

I have to agree that Brokeback Mtn & Philadelphia were 2 of the best films accurately portraying the lives of many gay men from their respective time periods.

I'd add Latter Days, Longtime Companion, Get Real, The Broken Hearts Club, and Love! Valor! Compassion! to the list.

Ode To Billy Joe was and AWFUL movie. I remember when the song came out in the summer of 67. Bobbie Gentry never gave a reason for his suicide, so one could suppose anything.

The fact that Robby Benson decided to turn the song into something condemning gay people is horrible, but typical of the period. i remember several movies of the period with the theme that if you're gay, you have to kill yourself. Would people stand for this nowadays ?! What a creep, Benson is. What ?! You CHOSE the "Jewish lifestyle" ?! Well, then obviously you have to kill yourself because you are NOT leading the "All American Christian Lifestyle" !

SOMEBODY really needs to take the editors of the various "EDGE" franchises out behind the woodshed for some discussions on journalistic integrity ... or just tie them down and make them watch the entire first season of Sorkin's "The Newsroom".

This is the third article out of the "Edge" franchises that purports to speak on LGBT history topics ... and ends up being both misleading and a fluffy waste of column inches and the readers' time.

Guys! Let's all go PM and put our heads together and write a REAL article for "EDGE" on landmark LGBT cinema ... one that can actually serve to educate our younger generation.

Hmmm?
