I actually agree with the article (gasp!!!).

There will ALWAYS be a scum-bucket law firm/lawyer willing to take a case like this, especially if, as it appears to be the case here, the client is promising half a million dollars "and then renegotiate" after that. In law firm lingo, that means, "there's no end to the money we'll throw at you, but we can't let the people paying the tab know the total price tag or they won't let us do it."

The pressure should have been put on Boner and his cronies to quit pandering to their hate-mongering "base" and simply walk away from legislation that is clearly unconstitutional. We know it, they know it, the lawyers know it, even most of the hate-mongers know it. But there are literally BILLIONS of dollars at stake, both in legal feels and political donations from hate groups, in defending this case. And Boner and his cronies aren't willing to walk away from all that cash (yet).

We're wasting our resources beating up on law firms for taking this case. There will ALWAYS be one in line right behind every one we convince to drop it.

Our time needs to be spent pressuring the lawmakers that are perpetuating this fraud on the public to stop wasting taxpayers' money attacking our families.

Oh don't even attempt to portray the Catholic church as the victim! These are pedophiles who are CREATED by the church's distorted views on sex. What do you think is going to happen to prepubescent children if you constantly portray homosexuality as evil for which they will burn in hell for all eternity, refuse to discuss their questions about sex openly and honestly, and then insist that ONLY young men may serve the church as priests and altar boys and have to do so only if they take a vow to remain chaste by never, ever, having sex during their entire lifetime?! So letting clients and potential employees of this law firm know what they are defending is somehow henious? I think it's called truth in advertising. Anyone who would knowingly and willingly defend this ugly law while claiming to be gay friendly gets what it deserves. The author of that article is a total idiot.

The issue, in the legal community, is not merely whether that firm or that particular lawyer, Clement, should be punished for taking a disgusting case. That happens all the time, with the bigot Boy Scouts being defended in Philly, or with firms defending tobacco or asbestos, or with lawyers defending serial killers.

The issue was _the gag order imposed on all employees_ of the firm regarding any discussion of the disgusting legal case. That's the issue, that's why the (informed) criticism, that's why the firm backed out. The ethics counsel at the firm swore in a letter to the court that there were significant ethical issues preventing the firm from proceeding.

Now, reading between the lines, not all of the partners at the firm were initially aware of the gag provisions in the contract with the bigots in the House. They soon were made aware of those provisions, and, from the wider legal community, of the unacceptable nature of those gag provisions.

There is no client on trial here. If there were, it would be entirely appropriate for any law firm to defend that client, regardless of whether he/she was perceived to be guilty or not. If you disagree, go ahead ... name the entity that is on trial here.

No, what is on trial is a law, and no-one needs to feel any civic duty to defend an unjust law. If you do, you can expect to be tainted by the same bigotry that created the law in the first place.

If the Third Reich law which placed Jews and homosexuals in concentration camps were to go on trial today, I dare any reasonable-minded person to take the position that such a law deserved to be defended in court!
