It's not required to go to a vote by the people. That's why it's called a representative republic; we elect legislators to represent us so we don't have to vote on every single bill.

Why bother having legislators if you're gonna have the people vote on everything? If I have to do the legislature's job, then I want their pay & benefits!

At the risk of feeding another obvious troll with WAY too much time on her hands.... Ever heard of swingers??? Funny how that's a rapidly growing community that's exclusively heterosexual, CLEARLY practicing "sexual discourse and disobedience" on a VERY VERY regular basis, and yet I don't hear any of you hate-mongers jumping up and down and screaming about them.
They're still allowed to marry both civilly AND religiously, are they not? Where's your outrage over them and their "sexual discourse and disobedience"?? Why don't you go pursue constitutional amendments banning THEM from marrying or entering into a civil union??
You've got your panties all in a bunch over the gays, but when straight people openly, flagrantly, and obviously practice far more outrageous sexual behaviour than married gay couples do, you just stand there with your thumb up your butt wondering what to do??
It's really hard to defend hypocrisy, isn't it??
I do not advocate or rationalize for swingers, adulterers, incest, pedophilia, beastiality, bisexuality, homosexuality or any other sexual discourse and or disobedience outside of a relationship between a man and a woman. The female being a mother and the male being a father. Nor do I support any such deviant behavior to be presented to young children as somehow being acceptable in schools or anywhere else in society. There is your own hypocrisy, rationalization, and lies.

All human beings have an obligation to their father and mother, grandmother and grandfather, as well as the natural structure and pecking order of any family regardless of whether any brother or sister wishes not to have children.

The video below is from Dr Sherman Abdal Hakim Jackson and describes quite respectfully 'homosexual tendencies' and 'homosexual acts' and why added space cannot be provided in order to redefine his religion, and I would go as far to say marriage and civil unions between a man and a woman.
No, I am not a Muslim but I am indeed open minded to all visionaries and scholars and know where and when to draw the line.

Enjoy

The people of Massachusetts petitioned to have a vote on the definition of marriage many years ago. I signed said petition. It was rubber stamped by our no good perverted loving representatives or whatever you want to call them. We lost a seat in the house for good reason and it could happen again when people vote with their feet!

The war on family, body, mind, and spirituality, since the 60's, one way or the other will come to an end in this country. Real change and transparancy should come willingly or it will come woefully. It all starts with the end of the federal reserve.

Wow, what a shocker that the anti-gays won in one of the confederate states. Hell, they'd probably vote slavery back in if they thought they could get away with it. That said, even in North Carolina it passed by the SMALLEST margin of any of the confederate states except Virginia. So even in the confederacy we're making progress over the years.
Btw, the California legislature voted in FAVOR of marriage equality- TWICE. Votes to constitutionally ban marriage for same-sex couples FAILED in DE, IA, NH, NJ, NM, WV, & WY. And Delaware will likely pass marriage equality next year, along with Illinios, Hawaii, and Rhode Island.
The equality train just keeps rolling along.......
Your optimism is well noted and thank you for sharing your social disease. Especially with our youth.

What difference does that make? Do we have a popular vote on every single bill?

The fact is KiMARE claimed it had been voted down EVERY TIME EVERY WHERE.

I showed she was mistaken.

Our nation isn't run by popular vote. It a REPRESENTATIVE Democratic REPUBLIC.

I sickens me that somehow we raised a generation that feels anything it wants it should have. Gays and lesbians are often accused of being selfish whiners.

Well you're balancing that out pretty nicely with your "I'm the center of the universe" mentality.

Then you should have voted for better representatives.

It's been 8 years since the court case in Massachusetts. If the majority of people were actually opposed to same-sex couples marrying, then they surely would have elected a majority of legislators & a governor who would support their position as well.

Sounds like you're actually in the minority in Massachusetts.

Anti-gay-marriage group conceals donors in Maine

The National Organization for Marriage’s quarterly filing with the state ethics commission indicated its political action committee raised about $250,000, which went to a group that will soon launch television ads. NOM also declined to release donors’ names in a 2009 gay-marriage referendum, when it donated $1.9 million.

Maine’s law requiring disclosure of contributors has been upheld in the courts. For now, though, the 2009 case has yet to be resolved with the ethics commission.

Matt McTighe, campaign manager for Mainers United for Marriage, which supports the new referendum asking voters to legalize same-sex marriage, said NOM should be required to release the donor list.‘‘Maine voters deserve to know who is trying to influence this election,’’ he said.‘‘Maine law is clear, and NOM refuses to follow the same rules that every other campaign in the state must abide by.’’

Voters repealed Maine’s gay-marriage law in 2009, but it’s on the ballot again in the Nov. 6 election.

I notice that the State of Maine is still dragging it's feet over the crap NOM pulled in 2009.

When will Maine FINALLY crack down on these lawbreakers?

WHY DO YOU THINK LITERALLY EVERY OTHER STATE IN THE COUNTRY ROLLS THEIR EYES BY JUST HEARING THE NAME MASSACHUSETTS? WHY DO YOU THINK THAT SOMEBODY WITH AN R NEXT TO THEIR NAME IS ACTUALLY NOT A REPUBLICAN? WHY DO YOU THINK THEY CALL THIS 'THE BLUEST OF STATES? WHY DO YOU THINK WE LOST A SEAT A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND WHY DON'T YOU CONSIDER IT A BAD THING?

First stop "yelling" Turn off the caps lock.

Second, I understand how you'd be upset that you didn't get what you wanted from Santa Claus but the fact remains that each State has laws governing petitions for voter initiatives. If it didn't get on the ballot it's because not enough people WANTED it on the ballot. There weren't enough valid signatures on the petitions.

It's pretty clear by now that the anti gay industry will do anything it can to manipulate the courts and the system, and when they don't get what they want in a fair fight they cry that there is some conspiracy against them.

Being gay and being on Topix for several years now I've developed a pretty thick skin. When I don't get what I want I work harder to get the results I'd like. Maybe you should do the same.

I have no idea what that rant means.

But I'll remind you that supporters of Same Sex Marriage have complied with all the laws of each State. We turned in our donor lists as the law requires. Now it's your turn.

Then obviously the majority of people in Massachusetts approve of the job their legislators are doing; otherwise they'd replace them.

If they're all so horrible, why don't you and your fellow anti-gays run against them? If you have the majority of people behind you as you claim, then you'd win in a landslide.

So quit crying and run for office.

Impossible. Anyone wishing to abolish the fed gets outfunded by a wide margin, or worse, I'll spare the details. Supposed to be greatful to be poor and have healthcare.

So instead, why don't you quit crying and figure out what the hell is really wrong with this country. Oh, that's right, you sold your soul too. Right comrade?

For any parent that wishes, hopes, or intends to have their children grow up and be any of the examples in the first paragraph above needs to have their head examined. The same goes for those with intentions of influencing children in such a direction. Especially those forfeiting the natural ability to rear and raise a child to begin with.

I don't know who you've been hanging around with, but every parent I've ever met simply wants their child to be happy, healthy, and grow up to be a good person and productive member of society.
