The US would be wise to stop kowtowing to the whims of Cuban-Americans. Yes, people are well aware their possessions and real estate were confiscated in the Revolution but that is now over fifty years ago. It is time to move on. Cuba is hardly the freest country in the world but it is certainly not the most repressive and they US openly supports other much more repressive regimes. Realpolitik would strongly favour putting aside differences and opening the country to trade.

Politicians in the US and Canada both are way too influenced by ethnic groups when making foreign affairs decisions. In both countries, right-wing Zionist Jews (who represent probably a minority of practicing Jews in the US bit probably a majority here in Canada) tilt both countries politics towards an unbalanced approach to the Israel-Palestine situation when in fact much more impartiality is called for. US relations with both Turkey and Azerbaijan over the years have been skewed by the influence of wealthy Greek and Armenian lobbyists (regardless of Turkey's role in the Armenian holocaust, which no longer has any living survivors). There are probably additional such influences that I am not aware of. This has happened historically as well - the United States might have joined Germany in WWI dues to anti-British sentiment in the Irish-American population as well as an influential German-American population had it not been for the Kaiser's fucking things up for himself with the Lusitania.
