CDC: Half of young people with HIV don't know it

Almost a quarter of new HIV cases are seen in young people, and more than half of them don't know they're infected, says a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Whenever I read statements like these, I can't help but ask, "How do THEY know?"

It's obviously part of a campaign to get the next generation to take HIV and other STDs seriously, but scientifically it's nonsense.

The CDCP should stick to the science, and pass off the campaigning duties to the NHS, NIH, etc.. A budget cycle must be coming up.

It makes me wonder if HIV hasn't indeed mutated to something more benign than what it was in the 80's - the old signs like Karposi's and pnemonia don't seem to show up anymore... or maybe people are being diagnosed now before such syptoms appear.

I think also we are learning what to look for, better diagnostics, and better treatments. I think we are also finding that people may be possibly developing a low grade resistance to the disease.
On the down side, I also think we are finding that the latent time frame of the symptom free period of the disease may be quite a bit longer... It might be taking longer for the disease to really get going, or it just may dormant in the body for a longer time...
As I understand it, the tests don't detect the virus itself, but rather the antibodies that an active infection produces. So if the virus is present, but in such a situation that does not produce the expected antibodies... the person could have the virus present, exhibit no symptoms, not even be detectable, and yet still be able to infect other people. The resultant latent times would be un measurable.

Why don't gay adults set the example and stop being so promiscuous themselves? Young people are not only learning that anything goes in sex, but apparently are also learning that having many partners is the way to live. Shame on all of you for leading the young into a dangerous lifestyle.

Sweetie, there's not paying attention and there's not paying attention. How could you not notice the whole fight for the rights of hopefully monogamous, hopefully lifelong same sex couples in marriage? Isn't the whole idea to make that kind of stability appealing? Young gay men are growing up in a world where they have a right to their sex life but rather limited rights to a love life, because people like you can't stop fantasizing about that sex life. Telling them to just keep their legs crossed only works on some of them, there is all of human history which is proof of that. The surprising thing is that we're not losing more.

The cheap test reads for the enzyme byproduct markers. The MOST expensive, a Titer test, hunts the virus.

No resistance to any of the strains has been found ... anywhere. The various strains DO seem to have different latency periods, hence the range: 3-15 yrs.

Gays do not need marriage to love or be in committed monogamous relationships. The fact that so few do when they are actually "married" means marriage redefined in more ways than one. A travesty, really. I personally do not care to turn the world upside down in an attempt to make stability "appealing" to people who clearly do not crave stability.
