Carnival Cruise Lines Forbids Passengers to be in Drag, Allows Them after Pressure

There are 10 comments on the www.southfloridagaynews.com story from Nov 29, 2012, titled Carnival Cruise Lines Forbids Passengers to be in Drag, Allows Them after Pressure. In it, www.southfloridagaynews.com reports that:

People who paid upwards of $550 for a double occupancy room on a Drag Queen-themed cruise ship expected to see drag queens all the time, all over.

But passengers for the Dec. 2 Drag Stars At Sea cruise were shocked when they were told by Carnival Cruise Lines that no one outside of performers on stage would be allowed to be in drag—six days before the cruise set sail.

“Guests are not allowed to dress in drag for the performances or in public areas at any time during the cruise,” read an email from Vicky Rey, Carnival’s vice president of guest services, sent out to passengers on Nov. 26. “Arrangements have been made for drag performances in the main theater featuring stars from LOGO TV. These functions will be private and only the performers are permitted to dress in drag while in the theater.”

The email concluded by saying any guest who violates Carnival’s policies and/or whose behavior affects the comfort and enjoyment of guests, will be disembarked at their own expense and no refund will be given. Soon after, comments in repudiation flooded Carnival’s Facebook page.

Less than 24 hours after the controversy erupted, Carnival’s President Gerry Cahill issued a response saying the policy was going to be lifted, allowing anyone to be dressed in drag while on board. “… Anyone who wishes to dress in drag may do so,” he wrote. Adding: “Given this misunderstanding, anyone on this cruise who wishes to cancel for any reason may do so and will receive a full refund of their cruise fare, as well as reimbursement for any non-refundable travel related expenses.”

A few years ago my partner and I (and a group of our friends) went on a GLBT cruise in the Caribbean. It was a blast. Lots of drag queens on that boat and no problems!

We were talking with some of the crew about working on a cruise that catered to LGBT customers and were told that the cruise employees actually sought out our cruises to work on as the LGBT customers were among the more courteous customers they usually deal with -- and we tip generously! Apparently our cruises were a lot more fun for the cruise staff too when compared with the regular cruises.

Carnival Cruise Lines is cutting off its nose to spite its face by welcoming RuPaul's Drag Race to come aboard, and then insist on no drag. I hope the RuPaul gang take their business elsewere as there are cruise lines that have no problems with people in our community and actually welcome us.

They suck. I have gone on two cruises with them and will never go again. Their casinos are all fraudulent and they are like Walmarts on the ocean. F them.

Well, I never go to those big fancy stores like Walmart, but I'll take you're word for it. I won't take a cruise with them.

Carnival provides one of the best vacation values for the money. The president of the company rescinded the former rules and probably fired the idiot who made them up. Every vacation I have taken on Carnival has had lots of gay people and many of their employees are gay. The President said he would give a full refund for anyone who felt slighted plus their additional travel expenses. This is a company I want to do business with.

Look at what was done to correct the misunderstanding, that is what is important.

One of my best friends when I was in my 20's lived in drag, and I have to say he caused me to laugh more back then then ever in my life.

I was in high school when I saw my first Drag Queen, it was Charles Pierce at the Gilded Cage on [if memory serves] Kearny St., San Francisco. Around 1965.
