I don't tip them, I give them money... especially the subway musicians. I was in the city just yesterday and did not see one single 'panhandler.' Not even in the subway.
Opening a door for someone, unless THAT is one's job, is just good manners and does not require a tip. I only tip a doorman if he hails me a cab.
I don't tip people just for doing their job.

20% would be $600. You got off easy.
Actually since the $500 in tips was just for the trip out, I was looking at close to $1000 in tips round trip- that's more like 33%.

Again, the point is if they wanted to charge me $4000 for he entire trip, then they should have just charged me $4000 up front.

I have no problem paying a reasonable price for a product or service.

Maybe if MORE people stopped tipping, then employers would have to pay their employees appropriately so they don't have to beg for tips all the time.

You all complain about the lousy pay for the service workers, yet you ENABLE that very same lousy pay system.

It really doesn't matter since you've only eaten in two restaurants in many years. Get over yourself. If there were no minimum wages this countries citizens would increase the numbers on public welfare by 300%. Just guessing on that but it could go even higher.
You've really flaked out on this whole minimum wage dialog. It's a silly position on your part.
The tipping policy is a large part of the reason I don't eat out much. And I'm not the only one.

Restaurants are losing out of many potential customers due to these archaic policies.

Note how the restaurants which have gone to a no-tipping policy actually see their business INCREASE, and their employees are MORE satisfied.

There no evidence minimum wage laws do anything except cost people jobs & raise prices of products and services.

Btw, those states with the HIGHEST minimum wage also have some of the HIGHEST unemployment rates- WA, OR, IL, CT.

The 5 states with the LOWEST unemployment rates- ND, SD, NE, HI, & WY- also have the LOWEST minimum wage.

Hmmm, the facts somehow that doesn't fit your narrative.

Maybe if people stopped wasting their money on the worthless degrees and spent more time gains the skills & knowledge employers are actually LOOKING for, then they wouldn't be stuck flipping burgers with their PHD hanging over the fry bin.

My hubby walked into the hospital this past spring and was hired on the spot, in spite of the "finite number of jobs available".

A relevant degree is only one small part of the package.

You can't call it a gratuity or tip if it's mandatory.
Well, don't got to Europe then, they INCLUDE the "gratuity" or whatever you wish to call it, IN your restaurant bill.

Your husband was lucky, they probably just had a janitor quit or something.

When was the last time YOU worked?

Correct. If they have a problem with how much they are making, they need to take that up with their employer; just like any other employee does.
And you stiffing the server is the way to make that happen. Got it.

With that attitude is it any wonder you'd have to settle for a job that only pays $2.10/hr?....
And I was a waiter 30 years ago, when I was in college. And 30 years later, minimum base pay for servers is all the way up to $2.65!!! Whoo-hoo!!! Imagine that--a 55-cent raise in 30 years.

What ARE all those selfish wait-staff crying about, anyway?? Shouldn't they be a *GRATEFUL* for the privilege of waiting on you for $2.65 an hour?? Some people can be SO selfish, can't they?? Ingrates!!

Great idea!! Let's see how that convo would go, shall we??

Server: I can't pay my bills on $2.65 an hour plus tips. From now on, you have to pay me $15 and hour and put up a sign that says, "NO TIPPING!!!" with lots of exclamation points so people will know it's for real!!

Boss: OMG!!! I had NO IDEA that you could not pay your bills on $2.65 an hour!! I'm *SO* glad you told me that!! I did not know that $459 a month is not enough to live on! Who knew!! Thank God almighty that you have shown me the error of my ways! From now on, I'll pay you double that! I'll pay you $30 an hour because you're awesome. Certainly I could never hire anyone else to wait tables in here for $30 an hour, can I?? I won't raise the prices on the menu at all, and if someone leaves you a tip, you can keep that, too! And if the business doesn't do well enough to pay you that, I will take it out of my own savings account to pay you because you're awesome!! Thank you!!!

How close is that to what you're imagining will happen?

I've been on Amtrak all over the country, always in 1st class. I have *NEVER* seen an Amtrak employee *EVER* make any move or suggestion that they expect a tip. And I'm always treated extremely will by all of them. Probably because I'm nice to them and don't treat them like servants.

Nevertheless, I generally tip the sleeping car attendant $20 a night, and the wait staff in the dining car $5 or $10 for each meal. The bartender in the club car gets a buck or two per drink, just like in any other bar. It makes me happy to recognize them for their hard work, too. Serving is twice as hard on a train than it is on land.

If you really tipped out $500 for a roughly 48 hours on a train, you had NO idea what you were doing. I can't even begin to imagine how it would even be possible to tip that kind of cash in that short a time. It's not like they've got hookers on the train or anything like that.....

Actually that's how it should be in America; all charges should be included right in the bill.

I 100% support that. And list that cost right on the menu.

What I DON'T support is getting the bill and then being expected to leave even more money on the table.

No, my husband is a skilled professional- as am I; he works in pre-op.

I haven't worked since I managed a veterinary hospital after retiring from the military.

I'm more than content to fish, kayak, tend my garden & chickens, and raise our daughter.
