In Ecuador, where it is illegal for political candidates to publically express discriminatory opinions, religious leader and former presidential candidate Nelson Zavala has been fined and had his political rights revoked after repeated homophobic comments during his political campaign.

Zavala was fined $3,000 and has been banned from any affiliation with a political or government group for a year for saying being gay is “immoral”, a “sin” and a “deviation of conduct” according to BBC News. Zavala told El Universo he does not regret the remarks and plans to appeal the judge’s decision saying the sentence is not against him but against “all heterosexual families.”

“On what they judge me, they will be judged,” Zavala said. “They don’t have interference in heaven. One day God will judge everything, and be prepared to explain to God why you called evil good, and good evil.”

The irony of someone passing judgement on others, then being upset when the same happens to them.

Too bad he's blind to his own hypocrisy.

To answer your first question, many countries are now making "hate speech" a 'crime'. As a U.S. Citizen and a gay man, I want you to know I completely support a person's right to express their opinions. However 'freedom of speech' is not yet a worldwide standard. And in addition to that, I hope you understand this is about a person who knows what the law in their country says.

Even though I disagree with Nelson Zavala's views (and yours) I will never advocate censoring those views. Mr. Zavala KNEW the possible consequences of his action and frankly I applaud his courage. Yet I am discouraged that he decided to try to become a martyr because of this. The lesson of the Good Samaritan comes to mind (LUKE 10:25-37). Perhaps each of you could learn a valuable life lesson in this. Personal Responsibility for what you say and do as well as the spiritual consequences of ignoring the messages of Christ the Savior.

I'm glad you are a spiritual person; perhaps you even identify as a 'christian'. Maybe you'll someday accept the old proverb that says, "You reap what you sow" as well as the Golden Rule (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you). Which is precisely what this so-called Christian did and then whined about it.
