Describing himself as "a proud gay man," Puerto Rican featherweight Orlando Cruz on Thursday became what is believed to be the first pro boxer to come out as openly homosexual while still competing.

As the article mentions, Mr. Cruz is the first boxer to come out while still fighting professionally. He's not the first pro boxer to come out as gay though -- in 1994 the Canadian Olympic silver-medal boxer Marc Leduc came out as gay. He came out after he had retired from pro boxing though.

This raises all kinds of questions. For instance, will the pre-bout release then have to be ammended so that if a straight boxer beats the crap out of a gay boxer, the straight boxer is not charged with a hate crime?
