The old scare tactics are in play as usual. The anti-gay MP says he supports civil unions for same-sex couples but refuses to support full legal marriage because "churches might be forced to perform them."

It hasn't happened in any of the places where same-sex marriage was made legal. And churches haven't been forced by law to recognize other legal interactions such as divorce.

There is no legal or logical justification for denying legal recognition of same-sex marriages.

The principal of Separation of Church and State is even less well embedded in the National psyche of the UK than it is in the US.

As far as I know, the Queen is still head of the Church of England. How separate is that?

Question: in the UK are churches (such as the Roman Catholic church) forced to recognize divorces since they are legal?

Question: are the only legally recognized marriages in the UK those performed through the Church of England?

The RCC itself doesn't recognize ANY divorces of marriages celebrated by it's own witchdoctors, nor of those of other sects whose marriages they recognize as valid (lots). They call them "annulments".

Thanks -- that proves my point that churches won't be forced to do things (like same-sex marriages) if they disagree.

The stupid thing about their opposition to our cause is that according to the Code of Canon Law, no Civil Marriages has any validity at all. They simply don't exist.

They are fighting against something that they teach doesn't even exist.

To wit:

Can. 1108 1. Only those marriages are valid which are contracted before the local ordinary, pastor, or a priest or deacon delegated by either of them, who assist, and before two witnesses according to the rules expressed in the following canons and without prejudice to the exceptions mentioned in cann. ⇒ 144, ⇒ 1112,1, ⇒ 1116, and ⇒ 1127,1-2.
