There really IS a glass ceiling for LGBT people in lots of professions. If keeping mum will get you past that barrier ... stay mum.

In real life; I find myself shunning homophobes lately
.
I guess the wear and tear from being battered by homophobes on TOPIX every day for seven years has taken its toll

Yes, that's how it is -- but I find that in real life it is not so obvious who is the homophobe. I recently started a new job, working alongside: 1) an evangelical christian, 2) a scoutmaster in the Boys Scouts who opposes gun control, 3) a senior Latino family man, and 4) a guy from a small town in Texas. Needless to say, I was a little cautious about revealing my orientation, even though this is the Bay Area. Well ... it turns out I was guilty of stereotyping, because I discovered that they were one and all quite vocal in their support of our cause when Prop 8 and DOMA came before the Supreme Court! Yes, admittedly, I do live in a 'bubble'-- homosexuals in other parts of the country don't have it so good.

Why can't gays just stay MUM period? Why does ANYBODY need to know you're gay except your butt buddies?
