Kaitlyn Hunt clearly violated the law. She is an adult and should have been aware that her engaging in sexual activity with a 15 year old girl, was illegal.

But I do believe that the proposed punishment is too harsh.

Absolutely outrgeous to do this to one's own child. Someone needs to kidnap these people, gradually cut off pieces of their bodies and eat them while they are still alive - or something equally gruesome.

They deserve it.

They didn't do it to their own daughter, they did it to her dyke girlfriend. You're worthless. Just because you get away with molesting little boys without getting caught, doesn't make it alright for others to get away with it. I know it's hard for you to believe, but it is against the law.
I agree.

Really? So on the 364th day or her 17th year she is a child, the next morning a fully functioning adult? Is that really fair?

The parents KNEW about this affair all along, yet did not stop it, but the minute the clock struck 12 on her birthday, they came out, guns blazing. Nice. They were waiting for it to bring another girl to ruin.

You do realize the younger girl is already a lesbian and this will do nothing but make her miserable and resentful of her parents.

I can see if it were some stranger who picked her up in a bus station how it might be serious, but this is far more complicated.

Let me understand you correctly.

A couple high schoolers are in a relationship. One of them turns 18 and suddenly the relationship is criminal?

Apparently Florida has a "Romeo and Juliet" law in place (s. 943.04354, F.S.) which specifically states that someone who is 18 years old should not have to be registered as a sex offender when in a consenting relationships with someone who is 15 years old.

There's a PDF about it at http://www.flsenate.gov/PublishedContent/Sess...

So while these bigoted parents are definitely going to make things uncomfortable for the 18 year old and her family, the law is not exactly on their side -- unless the "Romeo and Juliet" law has been overturned of course.

she was under 18 at the time, and also within the 3 year law. there was no crime and you know it.

'dyke girlfriend'? wouldn't that make their daughter a 'dyke' also?

So the question remains: What is the District Attorney doing?

I agree that the way some of these laws are written is wrong. The law allows a 17 year old to legally date somebody 13 to 16 years old but, the minute the 17 year old turns 18, it becomes a sex offense. While I understand the need for laws to protect minors from adults, the law is written in such a way that a relationship that may have been going on legally for 2 years is suddenly a crime because 1 of the participants turned 18.

Florida sets the age of consent at 18 and the close in age exception only goes to 16, so if her girlfriend was 15 years and 364 days old or less when the relationship became sexual, even with consent, she broke the letter of the law. She's pretty much at the mercy of the prosecutor on this one.

Read the thread, Foxy. You're looking like an ignorant fool again. These sorts of teen relationships are specifically protected under Florida's "Romeo and Juliet" law. The law even gives the example of an 18 year old dating a 15 year old which is precisely the case with this news item!

Not according to the "Romeo and Juliet" law in Florida. Read it in the PDF at http://www.flsenate.gov/PublishedContent/Sess... (which is the Florida Senate site, by the way.)

" Florida’s “Romeo and
Juliet” law does not make it legal for an 18 year-old to have a sexual relationship with a 15 year-old; however, it
does provide a mechanism for the offender to petition or make
a motion to the court to remove the requirement to
register as a sexual offender if certain criteria are met. "

The minimum age allowed under the law is 16.

Apparently the Law has already been changed. What does the DA's Office think it is doing?

I hope everyone is getting a taste of what it was like to be gay at all pre-Stonewall.

Florida still has one food back in the 50s.

Blame it on all the New York retirees.

Sadly, this is Florida's version of equality. Theoretically, she could be put in the same legal predicament by the parents of a 15 year-old boy, who didn't approve of what was going on.
