ABC uses video of hateful Westboro Baptist Church to illustrate opposition to gay marriage

Dec 12, 2012 Full story: www.foxnews.com 78

Apparently, ABC News can't tell the difference between opponents of gay marriage and hateful, anti-American bigots. As "World News" reporter Terry Moran highlighted the Supreme Court's decision Friday to consider the legality of same-sex marriage, video of Westboro Baptist Church picketers appeared on screen to visually represent "opponents."

Members of the small and extreme Westboro Baptist Church have disrupted the funerals of American military personal who were killed defending this country. According to Westboro Pastor Fred Phelps, U.S. soldiers are dying because of America's support for homosexuality. On June 13, 2005, the AP quoted him as saying, "Our attitude toward what's happening with the war is the Lord is punishing this evil nation for abandoning all moral imperatives that are worth a dime."

Yet, Moran announced, "For opponents of gay marriage, the very fabric of our society is at stake." During this voiceover, video showed Westboro protesters with signs reading "God hates America." (Other signs that the group is known for include "God hates fags" and "Pray for more dead soldiers.") After that footage rolled, Moran's piece immediately cut to a Family Research Council (FRC) representative.

"Are the journalists at ABC News incapable of discerning the difference between a principled opposition to gay marriage and a fringe group like Westboro Baptist Church?"

Clearly the "journalists" at Fox are incapable of discerning that particular difference themselves, having confused Peter Sprigg with "principled opposition" to "gay marriage"... FRC, WBC, ain't much different than the acronym when you get right down to how they feel about the issue.

Too funny. Hypocrisy, especially when you really don't get how hypocritical you are getting, is always worth a laugh or two.

And Fox News apparently can't tell the difference between rational discourse and giving free platforms to hateful, anti-American bigots determined to deny the civil rights of LGBT citizens.

I'm not sure I would class the FRC (or the AFA or NOM) as "principled opposition" but I certainly agree that they're not as overtly extreme as WBC and Mr. Phelps' little band of bigots.

I don't think much of the opposition has much in the way of "principles" when they distort, use scare tactics and outright lie to promote their message and deny right to their fellow citizens.

You have been taken in by FRC's thin veneer of civility. They may condemn you with a smile and tone down their rhetoric in public, but for their true believers they promote Scott Lively and Pete Labarbara. They applaud Uganda and other countries for severe, inhumane punishment of gays and lesbians.

They're actually much much worse than WBC.

Doesn't FoxNews use the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade as the depiction of the whole LGBT community's daily life?

Actually, technichally Westboro Baptist members are VERY anti gay marriage, so it is not 100% out of the park. Besides, those freaks are just more upfront about what they are thinking than most of the other teabaggers who are far too Cheetos stuffed to actually get out of the house longer than a quick trip to the Piggly Wiggly to pick up MORE Cheetos to shove down while staring at Fox News.

The Westboro freaks are all rather thin, I guess all that picketing and standing for hours in front of American hero's funerals burns a lot of calories.

You deserve more dead.
What brand of computer do you use? The name is right there on the screen, or keyboard. Mine's a Toshiba. All you need do is reply with the name. No need to go into long chats.

I'll look up for you if it is a gay friendly computer company or not and then you can BOYCOTT using it.

Key West = a gay mecca.

Funny you should choose that as part of your online name here.

You may be right - I pay no attention to them so I'm not aware of their internal workings. But I absolutely don't believe they are "principled" opposition.

I agree 100%. There's only so much of this sickness society can take from the onslaught of the gay agenda before it implodes on itself.

Huh, you don't say. What kind of computer are YOU using, "REGGIE"? Let us know so we can all laugh at your hypocrisy as you giggle at your "comic" postings, while using a gay supportive computer company's machines.

Actually, as more and more average Americans embrace the idea of same sex marriage, the "opposition" is naturally dwindling down to the lunatic fringe who are exemplified perfectly by the radically insane members of the WBC and their ilk. They will eventually be regarded properly as the dregs of civilized society, as are racists, who are accurately portrayed as knuckle-dragging KKK members and uneducated cretins.
