Russia and the IOC agree: Athletes and spectators shouldn't be openly gay at the Olympics

There are 24 comments on the www.slate.com story from Aug 15, 2013, titled Russia and the IOC agree: Athletes and spectators shouldn't be openly gay at the Olympics. In it, www.slate.com reports that:

On Monday, the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed what other Russian officials have been saying for weeks: Openly gay people attending the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, including athletes, will be arrested under the country’s draconian new anti-gay law. That law, you might recall, prohibits “homosexual propaganda” and is designed to discourage any kind of support for gay rights or even gay people.

The International Olympic Committee’s response to gay people? We mean it: Stay in the closet.

My personal opinion is that the games should be called off---or, better, moved to another country. Baring that, there should be demonstrations by gays at the games, and if the friggin' Ruskies try to stop them, the games should be called off. Putin and his gang are nothing but thugs---ignorant thugs. One should never give into such types!

To hell with the Ruskies! It would be ideal if all the gay athletes and their supports demonstrate for gay rights. If the Russian police dare touch anyone, there should be a loud and strong international reaction. We're dealing with thugs here! The only thing they understand is muscle.

What insanity!! First, the IOC is staffed by hacks. The Russians should be told to go to hell! Move the games! Alternatively, the athletes should "go nelly" and dare the Russians to touch them! What an ignorant country! It shouldn't be allowed to join in other events sponsored by civilized countries.

Somebody needs to organize a REALLY BIG Pride march for opening day at the Olympics, so big that the Russian government can't do a damn thing about it without causing an international situation.

Win lots of medals. If they do, they will be interviewed on TV. At that point they can make their feelings known about the Bigotry of the IOC and the Russian hosts.

I think a more lasting statement would be if countries like Canada were to design the athletes' uniforms to include obvious LGBT references -- like making them all rainbow colours -- so that in every event the equal rights statement was clear.

Excellent!!!! But maybe all countries with Marriage Equality or other acknowledgement to GLBTs should do the same.

The IOC should be taking the Olympics away from the Russians. Come back to Vancouver and Whistler, the facilities are there already!

Settle down.
They only mean to arrest gay demonstrators that should give a message that people are going for Olympics but not gay pride.
If you try to tell you are gay, they think you will make gay noises, so that is why to stay in closet.
They have very few gays there, so they don't do gay things.
So just do your own privacy wherever you are, but don't tell the world and Russia of what--that is the fault and they should not do it again, that gays can go and participate and watch Sochi Olympics for many weeks there.

Yes, why don't you ruin it for all the worlds athletes who've worked their tails off to make it to the Olympics? I'm sure they'd love to have their moment of triumph, of being the best of the best, overshadowed by gay people turning this sporting event into an international protest because they can't accept that the vast majority of the worlds countries don't recognize homosexuality as an alternate lifestyle? Selfish twerps.

They already caused a international situations they don't care they know they won't be held accountable they will just put back up the iron curtain all this for them is business as usual if you don't like it don't come the real people that needs to be held accountable is the Olympic committee not just for 2014 but for there decisions to put free people in other places with hostile governments personally I think the Olympic committee supports the Communist more than the free world
