Frumpy Middle-Aged Mom: Scouts' problem isn't gays

There are 31 comments on the www.kansas.com story from May 7, 2013, titled Frumpy Middle-Aged Mom: Scouts' problem isn't gays. In it, www.kansas.com reports that:

Boy Scouts of America, please listen up. I'm a former Scout mom and I have something to say. So here's my two cents' worth.

I know you recently conducted a national poll of parents. The most recent compromise proposal, unveiled April 19 - one that the Mormon church has said it won't oppose - is that no boy would be denied the right to be a Boy Scout based solely on his sexual orientation. That's a good move. But the proposed resolution to be debated also states that "open or avowed homosexuals" would continue to be nationally barred from being adult leaders.

I was initially reluctant to write this, because I don't usually delve into hot-button issues in my column, unless it's how badly I need to paint my house. That one got a lot of reader hate mail, probably from my neighbors. I also don't like perpetuating the stereotype that all gay men are stylish. One only has to look at Barney Frank to know that's not true.

You are under the misapprehension that you have a "gay problem," But what you actually have is a "dork problem."

Boys leave your program in droves, once they become old enough to be hazed by their peers for belonging to what most kids today see as a Stone Age institution. Brian D. Sweany, who became an Eagle Scout in 1989, recently wrote a piece in the Texas Monthly titled "Scout's Dishonor" about the ban, starting out describing how Scouting was "decidedly not cool, primarily for two reasons: one, everyone assumed you were a dork and a do-gooder, and two, no matter how rebellious and hip you might actually be, it didn't matter because you had to wear those horrific outfits with the green-and-red socks."

Notorious mob assassin John Veasey recently told CBS News that he had once been a Boy Scout troop leader, taking kids on outings hours before changing cars and conducting hits on rival mobsters. "The kids didn't know I was a hit man," Veasey told the reporter.

I wish someone could explain to me why you can be a hired killer for the mob and still be a Boy Scout leader - unless you're gay. I hope the Boy Scouts of America decides to do the right thing at the national meeting May 22-24 in Grapevine, Texas. Accept that being gay does not mean being a child molester, and stop living in the Stone Age.

You would if you felt your life depended on it. In many places even right now people routinely are killed if they are discovered to be gay.

In the United States, even right now, teens who are discovered to be gay are still sometimes sent by their parents to "conversion camps" where they are treated like prisoners and are put under intense pressure in order to get them to pretend to be straight.

In South Africa there is a recent case where one of these teen "conversion camps" treated the teens so badly that it resulted in deaths. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/30/gay-... covers that news story.

It was only 2003 when sodomy laws were finally struck down across the United States by the Supreme Court. In places where sodomy laws were on the books, gays and lesbians could be put in jail for being gay or lesbian.

There was huge pressure, and still is, for gays and lesbians to pretend to be straight and stay closeted. The fact that any gays and lesbians come out of the closet at all despite all the pressure says a lot about their courage and the fact that one's sexual orientation is so innate that it can't be changed.

I can't dispute what you're saying. I'm sure there's people that could possibly do that, but I'm sure it'd have to be very rare. There's bad people in every culture and religion, as well as in every aspect of life. Here in the US, couldn't be as bad as you're portraying. Even if it was, they wouldn't have to ruin a women's life to pretend. There's lots of people that never marry and is straight. They could have dealt with it even if they would've had to stay in the closet without claiming casualties of their own.

You're really bad at avoiding things, aren't you?

What makes a gay person grow up hating themselves so much and fearing being found out so much that they're willing to marry someone they're not attracted to and have children, knowing full well that they will eventually destroy the lives of the very people who's only crime was loving them?

Who's responsible for making that happen?

Except that just being in the closet isn't enough. To "prove" that you're *really* not gay, the best way is to marry someone of the opposite sex and pop out a few kids! See?? Indisputable proof of straightness.

Now, lets get back to that other question--WHY would a person be SO desperate to prove they're not gay?? Who is responsible for creating a world where being gay is so terrifying that a person will ruin the lives of other people to hide that they're gay?

You ever heard of closet....
Hey filth, the violent rapists of women I mentioned are not closet cases. Incest is usually older male relatives abusing younger female relatives.

Str8 men are sexual predators at higher percentages.

This doesn't mean closet cases (or gay men) can't be sexual predators - there are many rumors Larry Craig was an abuser in frat contexts - just that barring all glbt people from working with youth makes no sense.

It would make more sense to bar all str8 men from working with youth...although still not a lot of sense.

But I note your remarks about closeted abusers. I am sure you know whereof you speak.

Hey Queer, you made some good points until you turned and did the same thing your bitc.hing about. At that point, You lost your creditability. Claiming it would make more sense to Bar all straight people over queers, you just turned it around from where it was. I'll have to disagree with you as you would expect, since you read my post. Whether you agree with what I said or not, you know it happens a lot. I agree more straight men will abuse/molest females while more queers will abuse/molest males.

Hey stupid filth, you didn't.

If you want to bar all gay men from working with youth then you would more "sensibly" bar all str8 men from working with youth, because when you add up all the violent raping of women and all the incest it is str8 men who are the sexual predators at higher rates.

But that still wouldn't make sense, because even high rates of sexual predation among str8 males doesn't mean all str8 men are sexual predators.

Okay, closet case? Now stfu, talibangelical.

As I've pointed out to them, they've had a ban in place. Since GAY SCOUT LEADERS are BANNED then it's got to be someone who ISN'T GAY who has been molesting the boys in the BSA. And if kids are getting molested, then banning gays isn't the WORKABLE solution here.

It's the same ignorant reasoning Briggs tried to use in California to ban gay teachers. Ronald Reagan even said it was a bad idea. If it was a bad idea then do these nimnolls think it will improve with age?

GEEZ!
