Maryland Gay Marriage Could Hinge on Black Churches

Mar 1, 2012 Full story: The Skanner 9,656

With Maryland poised to legalize gay marriage, some conservative opponents and religious leaders are counting on members of their congregations, especially in black churches, to upend the legislation at the polls this fall.

Here is where Obama could stand up and support equality to make a real difference. Support in Maine, Washington, and Maryland is needed.

If these black churches oppose the state's definition of civil marriage, they can express their opposition by stop officiating civil marriages and only doing the particular religious rite of marriage, which is their right.

Prejudice and legal discrimination are still prejudice and discrimination.

"Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood. This sets the stage for further repression and violence that spread all too easily to victimize the next minority group."

"I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice... But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King, Jr., said,'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere'... I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people."

"We are all tied together in a single garment of destiny... I can never be what I ought to be until you are allowed to be what you ought to be," she said, quoting from her husband. "I've always felt that homophobic attitudes and policies were unjust and unworthy of a free society and must be opposed by all Americans who believe in democracy."
"Gays and lesbians stood up for civil rights in Montgomery, Selma, in Albany, Georgia, and St. Augustine, Florida, and many other campaigns of the Civil Rights Movement. Many of these courageous men and women were fighting for my freedom at a time when they could find few voices for their own, and I salute their contributions."

During Prop 8, propenents fooled many in the black community into thinking Obama supported it. They're very good at timing their misinformation so that it can't be challenged before people vote. So it would behoove Obama to get out in front and make his position on these referenda clear.

Gays have rights and are equal under the law. Every gay male can marry ANY woman that he wants to and any gay female can marry ANY male that she wants to. No other combinations go together. Check the bible. Is a man free to marry a dog, cat or horse? Why not? because those combinations don't go together. Man does not belong with man. It is sinful.

I can't believe you people say that, and then have the juevos to talk about the "sanctity" of marriage. Send your sister or daughter over for me to marry. I'm sure she would LOVE to marry a man that is not attracted to her. I'm sure our marriage would demonstrate the "ideal" of two people forced together who have no interest in one another.

Why would you put a gay man with a straight woman? That isn't going to bring happiness to EITHER of them. Marriage needs to be protected from YOU people, before you start bringing back ARRANGED marriages.

They do in 6 US states, the DC, 2 US tribes and about a dozen nations around the world, with more locations joining all the time. You are not the one doing the "combining", so you have no power to tell people what combinations they may pursue.

Not if you PAID me. The bible is completely irrelevant to this discussion. If I checked the bible, I would find rampant polygamy, concubines, daughters being SOLD to their husbands... that book is NOT a good guide for modern living.

No, it's because dogs, cats and horses can't sign legal consent forms. Why do you people always have such difficulty distinguishing between animals and humans?
fedupwiththemess wrote:

Gay men belong with gay men, and lesbians belong with lesbians. Any other combinations for them is disrespectful to their humanity (not to mention disrespectful to their mis-matched partner).
fedupwiththemess wrote:

"Sin" is a fantasy concept, unrelated to the real world. Our Constitution doesn't forbid "sin", it doesn't mention it at all. In fact, it gives me the right to IGNORE your religious concepts entirely, and build a life without them.

If you think something is sinful, you're free to avoid it. But nothing gives you the right to make that decision for someone else.

And all of your excuses don't cover up the fact that this is STILL humans mistreating humans for poor, poor reasons.

I guess if "it's a sin" then gluttonous people should not be permitted to marry.

Or to eat at their wedding reception, more accurately....

You are saying gay people have the right to act as if they are straight and deny the reality they are gay. Straight people have no such requirement. This is not equality.

Additionally, gay people can marry a same sex partner in several states and countries. Those legal marriages are denied equal treatment to the legal marriages of straight people in those same states by the federal government, and not recognized by other states while straight marriages are. This different treatment under the law is an undeniable example of legal discrimination.

Animals cannot demonstrate informed consent, even if they can meet the age requirements. Comparing the love and emotional bonding of two humans to a human and an animal is irrational as well as insulting. It is simply absurd.

And while the bible is not the source of law in our country and can be used to justify just about anything including slavery, segregation, and even genocide, many scholars believe it does not condemn adult loving same sex relationships. It has been mistranslated and misinterpreted to accommodate the prejudices of the translators. Jesus never condemned same sex love, and had plenty of opportunity had he felt it was important. Your prejudice is irrational, scientifically unsupportable, biblically questionable, and contradictory to the message of Jesus.

"Several books already exist attempting to demonstrate that the Christian Bible does not, in fact, condemn consenting-adult homosexuality. But God is Not a Homophobe has a unique perspective in that the author has a lifetime of experience in pastoring hard-core fundamentalist churches. His former bitter opposition to all forms of homosexuality has given way to a rational, unbiased acceptance that the Bible says hardly anything about homosexuality, and what it does say cannot honestly be used to condemn consenting same-sex unions." http://www.libchrist.com/other/homosexual/boo...

Obama isn't dumb enough to step in the middle of this when he's fighting for reelection. He would gain nothing, and could lose states like Virginia & Michigan where he's competitive.

We'll just have to wait until after the election.

What ever the reason you have for posting this crap the only thing you did is show how uneducated you are. There are a couple of real good responses to this post of yours by others, I suggest you sit quietly and read them several times maybe you can learn something. But for some reason I doubt you and learning fit together very well.
