Petition urges White House to classify Westboro church as hate group

More than 475,000 people have signed petitions asking the White House to crack down on Westboro Baptist Church after the group, known for holding anti-gay demonstrations at funerals, threatened to picket in Newtown, Connecticut.

I hate to break it to these folk, but this isn't something that the President can do with just the stroke of a pen. Taking away a church's tax exempt status ain't easy and the Freak Show of Hate isn't about to let it happen without one hell of a fight.

WBC is an extreme fringe group, but their repugnant actions are only different in degree from other right-wing religious groups, who all believe in their so-called "hearts" that being gay is a sin. They cannot accept that gay people do not choose their orientation.

And it's easier for these groups and churches to condemn homosexuality than the multitude of other "sins" that their religious text condemns - because it's not one that they (or at least the majority of them) fall prey to.

Adultery, for instance, is condemned many more times than same-sex behavior in their sacred text, but it is engaged in by many more of these blinded sheep, so they won't go after that sin. That would cause offerings to drop. Homosexuality is a much easier "sin" to target.

I think it's all rubbish. Westboro just shows the rest of us rational humans the logical conclusion of their warped thoughts. But I say again, the difference between Westboro Baptist and other so-called "christian" churches who condemn homosexuality, is a mere difference of degree. Westboro holds their animus up to the light so everyone can see it. Other religious organizations and churches think the exact same thoughts, but keep it hidden.

I don't believe the U.S. government is in the business of designating "hate groups", at least not officially. And be very careful about getting them to start. Remember, once they get into that sort of thing, who is going to make the decision about whom to include in that list? Maybe some day a right-wing conservative, and you know where that would lead.
