Rev. Peter Gomes, Harvard University Chaplain: "If society waited for majority opinion and legislative action, African-Americans, for example, would still be enduring the indignities of separate but equal accommodation and the other manifestations of legal, social, and political segregation. If the decision of the Supreme Judicial Court in Goodridge is "judicial tyranny," let there be more of it...

To extend the civil right of marriage to homosexuals will neither solve nor complicate the problems already inherent in marriage, but what it will do is permit a whole class of persons, our fellow citizens under the law heretofore irrationally deprived of a civil right, both to benefit from and participate in a valuable yet vulnerable institution which in our changing society needs all the help it can get." Two men and a baby.
Good one.
I never really liked that film, even if it was a completely chickflick comedy about the self-centered and immature incompetencies of the average hetero male.

It was a story about overgrown boys growing up. A delayed-coming-of-age tale.

My guess is that you didn't do very well in Literature, or the Reading Comprehension sections of the SAT.

You cannot change the homosexual mind. The homosexual mind is intractable. Homosexuals are like Communists. You cannot reason with them, you can only try to contain them. At the present, they seem to be escaping from their box.

Notice you are so convinced of the correctness of your position your are willing to harm others by refusing to treat them as you would yourself. Your desire to "contain" and "box" other people to keep them from enjoying the same freedoms you take for granted is a clear indication you are the one who is wrong.

It is you who refuses to follow the Golden Rule.

Rev. Dr. James Lawson is a distinguished United Methodist pastor who worked side-by-side with Dr. King training the activists who participated in the lunch counter sit-ins and the Freedom Rides of the 1960s. In 2004, he received the Community of Christ International Peace Award. Rev. Lawson said of the plight of many gay people: "Gays and lesbians have a more difficult time than we did. We had our families and our churches on our side. All too often, they have neither."

Not sure what your point is here. Equal rights struggles are the same in that they are seeking equal treatment under the law. They are different in that they address specific laws aimed at those specific groups. Yet many groups have and do support each other in their quest for equality.

“Many gays, many lesbians, worked side by side with me in the civil rights movement. Am I supposed to tell them now thanks for risking their lives and their limbs to help me win my rights but that they are excluded because of the circumstances of their birth? Not a chance.”
"I think Martin King would stand as his widow stood -- in favor of them." (Julian Bond, 2005)

I am one of those who willingly risked limb and life, and a B of LGBT alphabetizing and I thank you that you are willing to take a supportive reciprocal stance as we struggle to achieve sexual and gender equalities.

Prejudice is prejudice no matter who is the target.

It is expressed in various ways that may differ over time and place. Religious texts have usually been part of the excuses used to justify it. Inquisitions, crusades, slavery, segregation, and even genocide have all been supported by religious beliefs at various times and places.

Yet there is no reasonable, rational, or scientifically supportable justification for prejudice and discrimination.

That does not mean it does not exist. It does, despite the fact that there is no justification for it.

Here and now, gay people are the primary remaining group targeted for discrimination under the law.(Institutionalized prejudice is another topic)

But no matter what the form, who the target, or the motivations of the perpetrators, the effects are always the same: History and science have clearly shown, prejudice and discrimination result in needless suffering and death.

"And yet while their story of oppression and injustice is not the same as ours, it is equally valid. African-Americans recognize injustice when we see it. Gays and lesbians have been incarcerated, brutalized, lobotomized, raped, castrated, and robbed of their jobs, families and children."
Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights
