'Selma and Stonewall': Gay rights issues divide black civil rights leaders

Jan 28, 2013 Full story: blog.al.com 114

With his public endorsement of legalizing same sex marriage in May and last week's inaugural speech linking the civil rights movement of the 1960s to the struggles facing LGBT activists today, President Barack Obama has forced black civil rights leaders to confront an issue that sometimes divides them.

I find it interesting and disgusting that the "haters" continue to try to divide America and to some extent we, as Americans, let them.

In "civil Rights" an injury to one is an injury to all, "Civil Marriage" is a "Civil Rights" question. IF a "Religious Body" want to perform or not perform same sex marriages that should be up to them; but, for one "Religious Body" to try and tell a different "Religious Body" that they can't perform a same sex marriage is lat least then height of ignorance.

Also, IMHO, my sexual preference is my husband my sexual orientation is gay. Just like there is NO "Gay Lifestyle" there is NO "Gay Preference".

Of course there is. And yet, women are allowed to be scout leaders, even though a woman can be attracted to a 16 year old. We allow female teachers to teach males, and we allow men to teach girls.
And sometimes, in ALL of these situations, trust is broken.
The scouts, however, have made some serious errors in judgement. Their own rules say that no "avowed" homosexual person can lead or remain a member. Do you what that means? Ban and get rid of the honest and healthy.
Healthy open well adjusted gay men, women, and scouts are banned, but sick, insecure, sexually stunted pedophiles of any orientation are not. As long as they APPEAR to live the appropriate lifestyle. It's all about appearance, but not fact.
Don't you find that a bit scarier than simply allowing openly gay leaders and scouts?
This is excellent wording for the real issue with forcing them into the closet the way bigots try to do. If anyone doesn't agree with you here, they're being willfully naive and ignorant.

If a 21 year old man falls in love with a 16 year old boy and gets caught he is deemed a pedophile.
Really? By whom? A 21 year-old man who falls in love with a 16 year-old girl is unlikely to be branded as such, so why should a gay man in similar circumstances?
Pete wrote:
The gay community will essentially outcast him by saying he's NOT homosexual because they don't want to be linked to pedophilia whatsoever.
You're just kind of guessing at a definition of "pedophile", aren't you hon? Just for future reference, a pedophile is someone who sexualizes prepubescent children, calling a 21 year-old with a 16 year-old a pedophile is problematic on a lot of levels. Something else you should know, while there are same sex attracted adults who are also pedophiles, they are actually few and far between, They make up a no greater percentage of our population than the percentage among heterosexuals and there are a lot fewer of us. The vast majority of men who are sexually attracted to young boys and other men who sexually abuse boys identify as straight and usually have the sexual history to back that claim up.
Pete wrote:
As time goes on and both partners are in their 20's and are struggling with the law to get married, the gay community will now support them as fellow homosexuals, defend them, and welcome them with open arms.
Sweetie, as long as the relationship was legally appropriate (the 5 year difference makes you count calendar days to fit within most states Romeo and Juliette laws and/or the 21 year-old isn't in some position of authority over the 16 year-old), most folk in the "gay community" wouldn't have had a problem with their relationship to begin with. Y'all might write them off, but we're more understanding.
Pete wrote:
Although homosexuals continue to strive to gain social equality (and rightfully so) their stance is very hypocritical.
First you attribute a stance to us that clearly has no basis in reality and then you condemn it as being hypocritical of US. Neat.
Pete wrote:
There are of course heterosexual pedophiles, but the gay community will tell you it's "scientifically impossible" for there to be homosexual pedophiles.
Here's where you might want to break out a pencil and some paper, you really should be taking notes. No one has ever said that there are no such creatures as "homosexual pedophiles" dear, we just want you to know that very few "homosexual pedophiles" are actually homosexual when it comes to their sexual attraction and behavior with their fellow adults. People should not confuse all acts by "homosexual pedophiles" as acts by those who are homosexual, because usually, they aren't. The vast majority of those men who meet the clinical definition of being "homosexual pedophiles" identify as heterosexual when it comes to their adult activities and usually behave that way.

"NOM's plan to cultivate a "wedge" between minority communities was revealed earlier this week when the Human Rights Campaign circulated a previously confidential document after a federal judge in Maine ordered it to be unsealed. The December 2009 internal NOM document states, "We aim to find, equip, energize and connect African-American spokespeople for marriage; to develop a media campaign around their objections to marriage as a civil right."

In a written statement released Wednesday, NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous said, "This memo only reveals the limits of a cynical agenda. The truth is that no group, no matter how well-funded, can drive an artificial wedge between our communities. People of color understand what it is like to be the target of discrimination. No public relations strategy will make us forget that.

The National Black Justice Coalition also denounced NOM on Wednesday. The non-profit's Executive Director and CEO Sharon Letteman-Hicks said in a written statement, "These documents expose NOM for what it really isa hate group determined to use African American faith leaders as pawns to push their damaging agenda and as mouthpieces to amplify that hatred. With these memos made public, the black faith community must refuse to be exploited and refuse to deny their fellow brothers and sisters equal protections under the law." http://www.gay.net/news/2012/03/29/black-civi...

What`s the difference between a homosexual who wants to sodomize an 18 year-old boy and one who wants to be with a 16 year-old boy? Nothing. Homosexuals complain about not being able to get married, but will they take responsibility for the future rapes of boys in the Boy Scouts once they`re let in? Probably not. They`ll lie to your face that they can block their actions when it comes to younger males, and verbally spit in your face while doing so. Being uppity and arrogant has gotten you nowhere in their "fight for equality".

Quite the opposite.
Thank you.. Though heated my post was well intentioned.. I AM passionate about my convictions (runs in the family) but I have nothing but love for my fellow beings and are constantly making excuses for them; even when they clearly do not deserve them.. One always hopes they'll improve with a little charity and patience.. I try to keep in my mind the inescapable fact of my own failings (many) and go from there..

"Unfortunately, many people are not aware of the three decades of research showing that children of gay or lesbian parents are just as mentally healthy as children with heterosexual parents, notes Cerbone. One such study, published in Child Development (Vol. 75, No. 6, pages 1,886-1,898) in 2004, compares a group of 44 teenagers with same-sex couples as parents with an equal number of teenagers with opposite-sex couples as parents. All participants were part of a national, randomly selected sample of teenagers from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.
"There were very few group differences between the kids who had been brought up by same- or opposite-sex parents," says Patterson, who conducted the research with students Jennifer Wainright and Stephen Russell, PhD, now an associate professor of sociology at the University of Arizona. One group difference that Patterson was surprised to find: Children of gay and lesbian parents reported closer ties with their schools and classmates. However, says Patterson, the difference was small and needs to be studied further.

Patterson's study debunks the myth that children of gay or lesbian parents have trouble developing romantic relationships due to a missing father- or mother-figure-a concern that judges making custody rulings have cited. Equal numbers of teenagers from each group reported that they had been in a romantic relationship in the previous 18 months. Participants from the two groups did not differ in grade point average, symptoms of depression or self-esteem.

While the sexual orientation of the parents in Patterson's study did not predict the adolescents' social adjustment, the quality of the parent-child relationship did. Children who reported warm relationships with their parents tended to be the most mentally healthy and have the fewest problems in school."

Laws that target LGBT for punishment make those distinctions. While LGBT includes people of all colors, LGBT organizations formed to combat laws that single out LGBT people for discrimination. Yet discrimination is still discrimination, and "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

"When I'm asked if gay rights are civil rights, my answer is always:'Of course they are.' Civil rights are positive legal prerogatives, the right to equal treatment before the law.... There's no one in the United States who does not, or should not, share in enjoying these rights." Julian Bond.

John Lewis, testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Defense of Marriage Act, remarked, "I am very happy to see the Judiciary Committee holding hearings to address the issue of marriage equality. But at the same time, I must admit I find it unbelievable that in the year 2011 there is still a need to hold hearings and debate whether or not a human being should be able to marry the one they love."

Many gay couples provide a much needed home for the often abused and discarded, unwanted children of straight couples. They also procreate, using all of the wide variety of methods employed by straight couples who need assistance.

With around 100,000 children available for adoption who go without homes every year, the need for more families willing to take them should be clear.

While some gay people do procreate and others choose to adopt, people who cannot procreate due to age, sterility operations, or medical problems, get married every day. There is no requirement of the desire or ability to procreate or even the ability to have sex, to get a marriage license. Even justice Scalia recognizes procreation has never been a requirement, and it is irrational to make it one now and only for gay people.
