Somehow California was the 2nd state and now we might be the 15th state if we are lucky!!!
California is actually two States in one, each ideologically very different from the other.

You can say the same ting about New York, with the 7 downstate counties (The City Of New York and all of Long Island) as it comprises 11 million of the 19 million people in New York. And the 7 downstate counties are distinctly different culturally, and in many other ways as well, from the other 55 counties upstate. Long Island is the longest, largest, most populous, and most densely populated island in the U.S. And for decades it has been a Republican stronghold in New York.

Almost ALL states have split personalities.

Look at Illinios and the difference in support for marriage equality for the Chicago metro area compared to downstate. They are closer to confederates in southern Illinois.

Ditto for Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc.

It's more rural v. urban than anything else.

That is not the case with California, though "rural" might qualify for that 3rd classification. The split in Cali is between GOP and everyone else. lol

With the cheeseheads, I think it is not as much urban vs. rural but Dane County vs. everyplace else.

I can't think of anyplace MORE diverse than California. Everyone thinks it is round the clock love ins and tree hugging, but there are some HUGE conservatives here, even here in Palm Springs the mecca of gay, during Prop 8 I saw PRO prop 8 posters all over town. REALLY? Seriously?
