Looks like a new conservative lutheran church organization will be formed.

The Strib reports the vote was 559-451, or 1,010 votes total. In which case only 55% of the delegates voted in favor. That's a simple majority, but well below the 66% normally required to change ELCA policy; a decision itself that was not without some questions. Why didn't the P-Press report the actual count? Did you not trust yourself to report the number accurately, or did you think we couldn't do the math?

Looks like the ELCA is a designer religeon where one picks and chooses the Scripture they like or don't like, and thus worship. Wonder if they'll figure out a way to make adultery an act of friendship, compassion and understanding.

"Tim Mumm, a gay man and an assembly delegate from Whitewater, Wis., said the Scripture that guides opponents of the more liberal policy was written by mortals, at a much earlier time, and doesn't reflect what many Christians now believe." So for this person, Christianity is reduced to democracy and selective reading, eh?

"Some ELCA congregations had already been flouting the ban on noncelibate gay priests by hiring pastors in gay relationships. Some synods looked the other way, while others removed such priests from their rosters." The ELCA never had a ban on gay priests, because the ELCA has never had priests. Does the Strib have any editors? Or even journalists?

Luther would be running back to the Catholic Church if he had known what he started.

Whoops. I thought I was reading a Strib article. My apologies to the Strib. Maybe I need an editor?

That's why religion is crap.

Like Al Quie alot (a good person) but this is becoming a non-issue among well-educated younger people. The ELCA today looks like a Christian church for ALL, not just those lucky enough to be born like the majority.

This decision shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. Over the years we have slowly chipped away at morality and what should be considered as acceptable. From contraception / abortion, pre marital sex, divorce, living to together before marriage – nothing is considered wrong anymore because “my God isn’t judgmental” or that is “how things have evolved.” This decision is just the next step in that process and we shouldn’t be surprised when the next moral standard (if there are any left) falls either.

ELCA churches that don't subscribe to the gay agenda can leave and join LCMC. http://www.lcmc.net/

They are no longer interested in gaurding their flock to aid them with salvation. They are more interested in public opinion and making man happy rather that making GOD happy....Very sad....They are no longer a Church.

Gays and straights need to follow the same rules; the only problem is that gays can't get married in most states, so guess if we call it a 'committed' marriage, then they are okay to become a pastor. And pastors who are not married, must NOT play the field, whether gay or straight.

The newspaper editorial view is in favor of this, so they are willing to present the numbers in a manner most favorable to their ideology. I can see it really busting up some congregations when church's start to implement it, but I believe in freedom of association, so a church can get whoever they want as pastor. I am disappointed that the plain meaning of scripture was distorted to cover up the fact that it is extra-biblical. With the left, words are tools, and double-speak is the first rather than last resort. Heck, I think it will bust up congregations just talking about whether to get a gay pastor. Well, whatever, my church going days are well behind me.

Now they get to suffer the same fate as all the other liberal denominations that abandon God’s word: dwindling numbers, and ultimately, irrelevancy. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jul/02/a...
