Gay Marriage Needs A Name Change - Brian's Blog

It's all in the name. We did a web poll yesterday as to whether you support gay marriage or not.

From the article- ".....whatever you want to call it".

We want to call it MARRIAGE because that's exactly what it is.

He trots out the same lame claim that the general public would be more supportive of same-sex couples if only we called our legal unions something other than marriage, even though his own poll shows over 50% support for marriage for same-sex couples.

Nope, not gonna happen.

We know the anti-gays will oppose giving legal rights to same-sex couples no matter WHAT we call our unions. That has been proven time & again, most recently in the Ref 71 vote in Washington in '09, when the same percentage of anti-gays who oppose marriage for same-sex couples also voted against domestic partnerships. Thankfully the anti-gays lost in '09, just as they are likely to lose this year.

The ONLY reason some of the anti-gays now suddenly CLAIM to support civil unions is because we are on the verge of getting full marriage equality at both the state & federal levels.

Maybe if they hadn't spent the previous 30+ years fighting ANY recognition & legal rights for gays & lesbians and our unions, then we MIGHT have accepted some parallel system.

Too little too late!

Eff that. I am not about to start calling it anything but marriage. You can take your internalized shame and heteronormative bowing and scraping else where cause just no. People are ignorant but they aren't stupid. It is called marriage, and to call it anything else would be to admit that a gay couple is in anyway different than a straight couple. They would shoot it down no matter what it was called or we would have "civil unions" right now anyway. I just can't even with this BS this morning.

I agree with the previous two posts. It is Marriage, whether it is same-sex or opposite-sex. We don't call theirs Opposite Sex Marriage. We just call it what it is......Marriage. Same for us. And for the record, we are not fighting for gay marriage or same-sex marriage. We are fighting for Marriage Equality. It's not the term describing it that our opponents are worried about. They are simply opposed to Equality by any other name.

Exactly. Equality is the whole point of the fight. We are being denied it, and they want to keep it from us. For the anti-gay it's all about keeping us uppity LGBT people in our places.

The real redefining of marriage taking place is that of those who want to make damn sure that we will never be associated with the it. The ONLY way that both same sex and opposite sex couples will be treated as legal equals is if the same laws and titles apply to both. If WE have to be satisfied with accepting the state dispensing a title other than marriage, opposite sex couples will have to accept the dispensing of that title on them too.

The gays complain that "separate is not equal", yet they seem to understand why there are both Mens and Ladies restrooms.
The gays say they are demanding "equality", but are really demanding "exactness", which is impossible. They are too stupid to realize that four quarters is equivalent to a dollar.
Instead of finding ways to compromise and live in harmony with their fellow man, they would rather f**k with you.

It's a word. If one is against gay marriage simply because of the word "marriage" being used, then that is no argument at all. A simple word is nothing to deny rights over. If that was all it was, then we would have had gay marriage awhile ago, with all the benefits, but just a different name.

Funny, but some places in the world (Canada for instance) have had no problem with implementing real equality including using the same word for all marriages.

And the sky didn't rain fire and brimstone, and the country's economy went on like normal, and society continued as it always has.

Those darn facts keep messing up the anti-gay arguments!

There is no reason to have separate restrooms either.

Who cares if your crapping next to a man or a woman?

Oh here we go again with bathrooms. Get over it already. Signs on doors have nothing to do with "marriage". But your bathroom fixation does remind me of signs that said, "Whites only". That's not the society I want to live in and I doubt many want to return to that "Golden Age" of separate but equal.

You say we aren't trying to find a way to fit in and guess what, you're right. We're demanding to have what other citizens have.

As for the word "marriage" we use it because that is what it is. True some word say "A Rose by any other name" but why should we create a different term for something that is universally understood?

I do wish people would use the term "same sex marriage" since I feel it's more accurate than "gay marriage". But I'm not going to support some "civil unions" BS.

If YOU want us to use "civil unions" then help us change the law so we get the same rights, benefits and responsibilities every other married couple enjoys.

And for the last time get off the bathroom sign schtick. It's silly. We don't have separate facilities on buses and airplanes and the world is handling that perfectly well.

You obviously can't handle the freedoms promised to everyone by the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Why don't you do everyone a favor and move somewhere that agrees with you on these topics? I hear Uganda and Iran would be ideal for you.

You're the one who spends so much time on the Gay Lesbian Topix forum. You're a total closet case and we all know it!

I don't like accusing someone like him/her/it of being a gay closet case but I have to admit in my 54 years I've never met a straight guy who is as fixated on male anal sex and feces.

Let's just agree the little boy has some serious issues and is using Topix as a cover for dealing with them.

Typical queer rationalization. Ask the same question of any architect and they will look at you like you're an idiot.

(Some of us Canadians live in the United States -- just like some Americans live outside their home country!)
