Back in early 1990, I would visit my BEST friend, who was dying of AIDS, at Huntington Hospital in Huntington on Long Island. Members of my family visited him, as well as friends and others.

We frequently stayed long past official visiting hours had ended, and we were never questioned by the staff as to whether we were relatives, friends or any other relationship, nor were we ever asked to leave because visiting hours were over, nor were we ever asked toleave for any reason whatsoever.

The staff at Huntington Hospital were always as nice as could be.

Kevin Baxter was my BEST friend at that time, and he died young at the age of 29 years. We saw each other EVERY day in 1990 and 1991 until he died in late 1991.

He was a GREAT guy, my BEST friend, and he is greatly missed.:(

What the hospital's "side" omits is that they considered the homophobic brother as family over the gay partner. Hopefully they will be the target of a very large lawsuit. Funny how attitudes and rules change when it cost them money.

I believe there is more to this story than the Hospital is admitting......because in this article, no family member was mentioned.....sounds like a lawsuit may be headed the Hospital's way and they are trying to avoid it by blaming the patients partner!!!

The hospital that my spouse and I use, a Catholic one mind you, was very specific when I was admitted as to who was responsible for my medical decisions and visitation. Since we don't have Marriage Equality in MO, I told her my spouse was my "friend". She was very diplomatic, and said, "I don't wish to be offensive if this is not the case, but is he your "friend" or your "partner?". I told her my partner, and she politely asked if we had all the legal papers. I told her yes, and from then on, whenever he was there, they filled him in on my care and treatment. The doctor was also very accommodating. But then, I am on Medicare, so they have to follow the rules that Pres. Obama put out not to long ago, including us.
