Retired Boy Scouts executive defends his work as keeper of secret sex files

Paul Ernst appears to be your average mild-mannered accountant type, but look past the glasses and the tie, and you'll find a man once tasked with the job of playing morals cop for the Boy Scouts of America.

For more than two decades, if a troop suspected that a child molester was among them, Ernst was the guy to tell. From 1971 to 1993, when he retired, Paul Ernst was officially the BSA's national director of registration, subscriptions and statistical services—maintaining membership rosters, producing stats for annual reports and keeping the books on Boys' Life magazine subscriptions. But he also had the unpleasant task of being point man for the Boy Scouts' "perversion files," a secret system started around 1920 to try and keep unfit leaders out of the institution's ranks.

Ernst regularly received letters from across the country. They detailed despicable acts by adult staffers and volunteers, and requested the men be banished from the BSA's rolls: "indecent liberties with a child." "mooning (dropping pants) of boys by the adult leaders." "second degree sodomy."

For Ernst, once a small-town Scout himself, policing the organization's seedy side meant being the middleman between troops on the ground and BSA brass, who strived to keep their system as private as possible. That shroud of secrecy is now being attacked by victims' advocates who blame the Scouts for putting the institution before individuals.

Officially, the Scouts have asked Ernst not to talk. But the 86-year-old did tell Yahoo News he has no regrets about his career and that he performed his job the way he was told.

He's also pretty screwed up in the head. It probably would have done his life a lot of good if he could have been encouraged to discover his true sexuality at a younger age, BEFORE he was locked into a marriage that didn't suit him, but very likely he lived in an environment where that was forbidden, and he was heavily pressured to conform. We'd see LESS of this kind of crime if people who ARE gay were encouraged to BE gay, rather than having their sexual psyches twisted with ideas of "evil" and "brokenness".

Instead, we get a culture of anti-gay organizations like the BSA and the RCC, who turn away mature, well-adjusted and INNOCENT gay people, while providing a back-drop of conformity where abusers can fit it by simply playing to the rules. These backwards, ill-informed groups lay out the expectations of what they think is "normal", giving the pedophiles the cover they seek. They simply ACT "normal". While true gay individuals, those who have explored their lives and know where they stand, are locked out of service and acceptance, when they were never the ones who would commit these atrocities to begin with.

Stop filling the minds of young gay people with such twisted bunk, and they won't grow up to become such twisted adults. Stop pretending to dictate what is "normal", and you'll stop HANDING the criminals the camouflage they need. Allow qualified gay people to serve by your side, and you'll finally learn a thing or two about the people you baselessly slander.

No, not a "typical" one, but one that was not allowed to follow the most appropriate path for his life. One who was surrounded by people who expect him to squelch his sexuality, and to suppress any true feelings that he feels.
