Religious right on the wrong side

After years of debate and disappointment, New York, a hotbed for gay rights activists since the late 60s, was finally added to the list of states that allow same-sex marriages with the passage of the Marriage Equality Act late Friday evening.

Earlier in the week, the Democrat-led New York Assembly passed the bill with a vote of 80 to 63, but in the state senate, where the Republicans hold a slight majority, victory was not nearly so certain. Among the voices speaking out against the bill, none carried quite so far as that of New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

I don't think that the Bishop has anything to worry about. Who in their right mind would ask a Roman Catholic priest to marry them knowing how the hierarchy feels?

It is hard for me to understand how a LGBT individual can even be active in the Roman Catholic church since they are clearly not welcome.

They are often welcomed by their own family and immediate circle of friends, among whom they grew up -- these folks all turn a blind eye to the church's shortcomings and choose to focus on the good stuff. It's kind of like the way we turn a blind eye to our own democracy's shortcomings and believe we live in the greatest country, even though it is evidently going to be the last on earth to allow full gay rights :-)

I agree. I'm a church-going Protestant, and it has always baffled me as to WHY ANY self-respecting gay or lesbian person can want to be a Catholic and attend a Catholic church. To me this is like a Jewish person belonging to the KKK. It doesn't make SENSE !

In fact, I changed denominations in 1995, to the United Church Of Christ, BECAUSE of their welcoing of gay and lesbian people into the church and the fact that they ordain gay and lesbian people.

Since 1995, I have met 3 lesbian pastors, and 2 gay male pastors in the United Church of Christ.

It just doesn't make sense for a gay or lesbian person to want to be Catholic.

That's an easy one.
Queers infiltrate the church, for the children.

And why do YOU infiltrate a gay forum such as this -- is it for the gays? I thought so -- you're still in the closet; tap, tap, tap ... wide stance, all that ... get it. But listen, if little kids is your thing, I would suggest that you should be careful about mentioning it so openly here -- most of these gays are making wedding plans and/or raising families and really don't care for pedophiles. You could get reported to the police and arrested before you even know what happened. Take my advice: rather step away from the Internet and spend a quiet evening reading your Bible, OK Buddy?

You mean that some gay people, raised in the Church, want to raise their children in the Church as well?

Yes. It does happen.

hey, Frank, did you see where your honey lamb Bachmann said she would block gay marriage, even though the state voted for it (New York)? Still love her so much?

Tick tick tick...that's the clock counting down on you and your cranky peers, grampy. Someday soon all you old haters will be in your lonely graves and your creaky old attitudes will be buried and forgotten with you. No one will mourn.
