I sent them an email about this the other day complaining about this, and I received a form letter as a reply telling me (much to my surprise !?) that the word "gay" has multiple meanings and that they wanted no misunderstandings.

I shan't be purchasing any Hallmark products again.

I'm sure they changed as they thought no one would buy it with the word gay on it. Sad bit probably true

When I read the phrase "fun apparel", I immediately thought of leather harnesses and latex suits. Which is, I'm sure, what Hallmark intended.

What? What'd I say? Don't look at me in that tone of voice. <grin>

I don't know who wrote the headline, but according to the responce I got from Hallmark about the email of complaint I sent them, they do NOT regret the change, and have no intention of using the traditional lyric.

If this carol is not in the public domain, the owner should sue them for (as Carl Sagan would say) "BILLIONS AND BILLIONS".

I will not ever believe that their concern was for a "misunderstanding" of their intention.(And if it was, it was of being associated with the gay community as a whole.) It was a homophobic response by a conservative company and they just could not have the word "gay" on the ornament in such a bold fashion, as it is on the sweater. People might think them a liberal company or a company standing up for civil/human rights. Shame on Hallmark. You won't get my business any more either.

That's what I told them in my email to them.

agreed.

As soon as I saw the story appear I new a response like this wasn't far off.

Reminds me of something I heard once. Ever notice that sometimes ideas that come off the top of your head end up small and flaky?
