Bishop: Jesus would back gay marriage?

Nov 27, 2012 Full story: www.seacoastonline.com 338

Many may consider it a fact that Christianity bans gay marriage, but at least one bishop begs to differ.

A crowd packed the Congregational Church of Exeter Monday night to listen to a talk and Q&A from Gene Robinson, the openly gay Bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire in the Episcopal Church ...

from seacoastonline:

"(Churches) always say that you and I will be judged on how we care for the most vulnerable, so I think it's safe to say that if Jesus were alive today he'd be up to his eyeballs in this movement," said Robinson, who is married to a man."

When Jesus insisted on monogamous marriage, he predicated it on a passage in Genesis which says that "from the beginning, God made them male and female ... In other words, the fact that God had designed two, and only two, sexes for complementary sexual pairing was Jesus' basis for monogamy," said Rev. Robert Gagnon, a New Testament professor at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

What Robinson thinks and what Jesus says are two different things.

This is quote Robinson thinks, "I think it's safe to say that if Jesus were alive today he'd be up to his eyeballs in this movement."

This is what Jesus says, "Haven't you read that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,'and said,'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Jesus answered the question of easy divorce but going back to God's institution of marriage in Eden. There is no scriptural reason to think that he would not answer all questions regarding marriage -- whether divorce, gay marriage, bigamy, polygamy, "common law" marriage (doesn't exist in most states), living together as though married without being married -- in any other way. God himself established marriage in Eden and has given no indication in the Bible that he has changed it.
Even though people in the Bible may not have followed God's Word does not negate the institution of marriage, as Jesus pointed out. He also says that God allowed such things -- not because of their love, but because of the hardness of their hearts!

So who you gonno believe? Gene or Jesus? I feel more than safe now and in the final judgment siding with Jesus.

And who are you to say that it is not Bishop Robinson who is siding with Jesus? You can quote the Bible all you want, but you are speaking for nothing more than your choice of interpretations, not necessarily for Jesus himself. If you want to believe that God does not bless marriages of same sex couples and Jesus doesn't approve, knock yourself out, but why should your issues with what others say God is doing be anyone's problem but your own?

Jesus often quoted that Bible, while Robinson often disagrees with it, so how can he side with Jesus while disagreeing with Him over scripture?

When Jesus insisted on monogamous marriage, he predicated it on a passage in Genesis which says that "from the beginning, God made them male and female ... In other words, the fact that God had designed two, and only two, sexes for complementary sexual pairing was Jesus' basis for monogamy," said Rev. Considering the Bible wouldn't be compiled for another couple of centuries, that's a pretty impressive miracle.

Jesus disagreed with a whole lot of that scripture too sweetie, where do YOU say that Jesus and the Bishop have disagreed?

Yes dear, you quoted the Rev Gagnon before, his choosing to side with an anti-gay interpretation for scripture is none too surprising. If that is what he chooses to believe, more power to him, but if he imagines himself as actually speaking on behalf of Jesus, we'll need just a little more than his word on that.

Gagnon chose to side with Jesus, so does that make both anti-gay?

Jesus was a Jew, and He NEVER "insisted on monogamous marriage" ! The Jews were polygamous (some still are), and didn't largely abandon polygamy until the 14th century A.D.. And that was only done so as to not offend the Christians in Europe who greatly outnumbered them.

NOWHERE does the bible command monogamy.

Sweetie, Gagnon says he is siding with Jesus, Jesus himself has neither confirmed or denied such an agreement on this or any other issue.

Yes dear, you have said that before, it still offers no proof of how he would feel about a same sex couple who wished to commit their lives together in his name. From my reading of the Bible, I can't exactly picture him telling then no, they are going to hell just for thinking it.
