Will, I've been reading your posts for some time now. I'm just a bit curious.

What is your purpose for being on this forum?

My question is serious and sincere. No malice intended.

The medical and scientific consensus is that attempts at eliminating same-sex attractions are not effective and are potentially harmful.

The ethics and efficacy of these procedures are rejected by all mainstream medical and mental health associations that have taken a position on the topic. Their stance is that sexual orientation is unchangeable, and that attempts to do so are often damaging to the person's well-being. The American Psychiatric Association states that "ethical practitioners refrain from attempts to change individuals' sexual orientation."

Major organizations that reject reparative therapy include the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Association of School Administrators, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Education Association

NARTH President, Charles Socarides, had run into trouble with the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA), of which he is a member. According to a letter from Dr. Ralph Roughton of the APsaA, Socarides misrepresented the position of the APsaA in a published paper and a court affidavit. Socarides attempted to make it appear that the APsaA agrees with his positions on homosexuality. He did this by quoting an APsaA document written in 1968, which supported his views and which he called the "official position" of the APsaA, while ignoring a 1990 revised statement that drastically contradicted his views. The Executive Committee of the APsaA instructed the organization's attorney to write a letter to Socarides asking him to cease this misrepresentation and threatening legal action if he continued. Additionally, the APsaA newsletter decided to stop printing advertisements for NARTH meetings because the organization does not adhere to APsaA's policy of non-discrimination and because their activities are demeaning to our members who are gay and lesbian, according to Roughton.

Wil-ma is just so much fun. I've been reading his posts and other threads that he's started and it's just amusing to see. No matter how much scientific data is offered disputing or flat out disproving his claims he still stands by what he says.

With all the spinning he does you would think that he would get pretty dizzy after a while. Oh, wait, maybe that explains it...

It's weird right? If you come up with an argument against him, he ignores it and just repeats the last thing he said. Then usually calls you an "idiot". It's amusing in a way.

I have to say that he really wants homosexuality to be a choice and can't abide by the idea of epigenetics. Makes me wonder if he is struggling hard internally, if you know what I mean, wink wink.

No, I think he wants homosexuality to be a choice so he can choose not to be gay. I believe he is suppressing feelings and he believes Narth is the pot of gold at the end of his rainbow (pun intended).

When people say it is genetic, he dreams of becoming a heterosexual are squashed. He's fighting it with all his might.

It's no surprise that the founding members of Exodus (a gay reparative therapy group) ended up living together as man and man. They have since apologized for starting such a group.

Personally, I never use the argument that the person is simply a closet-case trying to work through their issues. While I believe that to be the reality for some of these posters it's not necessarily accurate for all. Some are just angry people who are feeling marginalized because their beliefs and skewed view of the world are becoming more fringe every passing day. Some are simply here for attention and the puffed-up ego effects of people responding to their posts.

I'm right there with you, but I make an exception for Wil. I truly feel from his posts that this is the case. We have a lot of crazy people on here and a lot of homophobes and this is the first time I made that insinuation.

In Wil-ma's case, you may be absolutely right. He clearly has some hang-ups about something. It's just a matter of time until the truth shall set him free.

I could be wrong? Let's ask him.

Wil, why are you spending so much time on this, repeating the same disproved "facts" over and over?

NARTH isn't a reputable source and everyone who knows anything knows that. You can keep posting your dubious "facts" Wil but you haven't proven anything except that you don't really have an understanding of the scientific method or what consititutes legitimacy.

Why bother? Anything NARTH produces isn't worth disputing because everyone (except parroters like you) knows it isn't worth the paper it was written on.

Not to mention the fact that even if anyone did, you would refuse to acknowledge it, much as small children do. You are incapable of carrying on meaningful, adult dialogue. You, Wil, are a waste of time.

Wil keep on posting because everything you post against me just proves what a huge hypocrite you really are. Although you were never fooling anyone in the first place, least of all God.

Wil, seriously, why are you so obsessed with homosexuals? Is that the only "sin" in the Bible? Clearly not, so why are you so obsessed? It really isn't normal for a "straight" man to spend such an inordinate amount of time in a gay forum, without being a supporter. Just pointing out the facts.

Thanks, all, for confirmng that you can present positively no logical, documented rebuttal to the scientific data presented in the study.
Can't and choose not to are two entirely separate things. I choose not to waste my time since no matter what I or anyone else says, you will never be wrong. You have already deemed yourself the end all expert on homosexuality so why bother.

Unlike you, I follow Topix rules and post on topic.
The topic is indeed a scientific study compilted by one of the nation's leading universities, proving that therapy is effective for homosexuals who desire to change.
You obsessively post in these fora, but rarely with anything on topic, despite the agreement to accepted to the contrary. You seem to think the topic is VERAD's hateful rantings about people she doesn't know.
Get over it. That's not what it's about.
But it is perfectly okay for you to sit in judgement of people that you don't know. Okay, got it.

No, any source that does not have the backing or receives accreditation from AMA or APA is not worthy of consideration.
