Mississippi Gay Bar Denied License

There are 38 comments on the www.huffingtonpost.com story from Jul 9, 2013, titled Mississippi Gay Bar Denied License . In it, www.huffingtonpost.com reports that:

Last week's Supreme Court decisions led to the restoration of marriage equality in California and the demise of Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. These were huge steps forward for LGBT Americans. But discrimination -- including government discrimination -- against LGBT people remains a daily fact of life for many, most notably in the South.

Just days after crowds of people in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York took to the streets to celebrate the Supreme Court victories, one woman in rural Mississippi took a personal stand against a local form of discrimination that is just as painful, just as ugly, and just as demeaning as the discrimination examined in the Supreme Court decisions.

Pat "PJ" Newton is a 55-year-old lesbian who, in the 1990s, operated a bar called O'Hara's in the small town of Shannon, Miss., south of Tupelo. The bar mainly served LGBT customers, though it was welcoming to all. The bar was a place where LGBT people could gather and socialize without fear, and it was the only gay bar within about a 100-mile radius. After PJ recently decided to reopen the business, she went before the Shannon Board of Aldermen to get a business license, believing the hearing would be routine. It wasn't.

To PJ's utter surprise, she encountered a hostile crowd of more than 30 people. She was confronted with a petition against the bar, signed by almost 200 of the town's 1,800 residents. Citizens and aldermen peppered her with questions laced with fear and insults. She was asked how she could call herself a Christian. She was asked whether she would let her daughter go into "a bar like that."

But I guess happy hour, strip bars, and other bars are "Christian"?

This is religious discrimination. I hope the county gets sued and loses BIG TIME.

Maybe when these non thinking humans understand that their bigotry has an actual price to it they will learn.

Let's face it, every time some church decides to leave it's denomination over this issue it ALWAYS ends up a fight about money and property not principles and morals!

I lived in West Virginia (where I was a bartender at a gay bar), and thee were numerous gay bars there.

In fact, West Virginia is the GAYEST place I've EVER lived.:)

(And while many people consider West Virginia a "southern state", it's northern-most point is actually further north than the southern-most point of New York City, and it was a Union State during the Civil War).

200 Resident out of 1800. Yet none of the anti-gay tolls are on here whining about this minority shoving their lifestyle down the throats of the majority!

But then hypocritical Christians and other bigots are famous for this.

This is a good story to book mark and throw back in their faces!

Editors can't delete posts. Only moderators and Rick and I are only Editors.

Twirl on liar.

But if you'd like a to post a story I'll be happy to delete it like many editors are now doing on many local threads whenever a Gay and Lesbian related story shows up on "their" forums.

Really? The how did all those fire fighters die in the forest fire last week? You really ought to take some time to explore your new state. It's terrain is widely varied and beautiful. If you don't like the scenery, just drive a few miles.

I live in SOUTHERN Arizona, in a small city of about 9000 people in the desert, about 110 miles southeast of where the 19 firemen were killed.(about 33.0,-111.5 if u want to look at it on Google Maps or Google Earth). I believe their deaths are probably the worst disaster in the history of the state.

And my car has had a busted fuel pump all week.:((The fix-it man is sposed to call me later today with a price).

I'm about 65 miles north of Tucson, and while some houses here have some palm trees on their property, they are are obviously all imported as palm trees do not grow naturally here in the desert.

Going to Google Maps and using satellite view, or Google Earth, or any number of other sites with satellite views (I like cbs weather), you can see the surrounding farmland here around the city, with desert, hills, and mountains further out.

I've only been to Tucson and Phoenix a few times and really have no reason to go to those cities.
