The citizens of your town have proven to the rest of the country that ignorance and bigotry are still alive and well in the south.

I don't think that's an entirely fair statement. This lawsuit was brought to the courts by a straight student. The majority of the students who expressed their support of the gay student were also straight. Yes, the principal showed the full extent of bigotry and fascism, as well as the school board, but the court severely admonished him.
I see this story as extremely positive. One, high school students felt strong enough about their constitutional rights that they became involved in what I'm sure was a heated lawsuit. These same students stood up against the tyranny of the principal when they saw one of their peers being mistreated. It wasn't too long ago an entire student body would not have only stood in silence if a gay student was mistreated, but they might even have celebrated such mistreatment.
So, instead of looking at the negative of the principal and school board, I choose to look at the positive of the students and their parents who supported them in their crusade. I think this bodes well not only for the future of Florida, but the United States as well.

Not only have the citizens of Ponce De Leon shown the rest of the world their ignorance and bigotry, but their lack of Christian Charity.
We can only hope that in a couple of more decades, these citizens will have died off, and a 21st century attitude will evolve in your school system!!!!
Shame on your school system!!!!!!

The sad part of all of this is that not all people in this town agree with this man. He just happens to be the one that demands the attention. There are a lot of good people here. We just have a "village idiot"!

I love the part about his lifting shirts of his teenage, female student to "look for signs of lesbian tatoos." How many perverted str8 men would kill for that kind of power...and here this poor principal can't even appreciate his "access" since he'll likely be caught trying to pay an undercover male cop for sex in a park before too long....

Ah, talibangelical bigots! What a tangled web they weave!

Here in lies the problem. The entire community that we live in is being judged by the actions of one man. Yes, we live in an area of God fearing Christians, but true Christians understand that TOLERANCE, not judgment is our call and responsibility. What we often forget is one of the basic principles that we are taught around here from birth, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you", you know, the golden rule. How big a fuss would be raised if a principal would have told a student not to wear a pro Christian shirt? You can bet it would be a big one. And the same people who are jumping up and down like a bunch of idiots now would be the ones doing it then, only, they would be the people yelling for a man to be fired. Before you judge our small town as a hole, take a look at who is making all the noise, take a look at the Judges Ruling. You can be sure that we are not all so hypocritical, so judgmental, some of us actually remember how we were taught, that is to treat others with respect and you will get it in return.

Perhaps your town should rally around these students and demand that David Davis be fired. For someone who obviously has no understanding of our US Constitution to now be teaching history and government is an atrocity.

Perhaps your town should rally around these students and demand that the Superintendent be fired.

Perhaps your town should rally around these students and recall the school board.

In esence, what you have suggested is exactly what is happening. It would be great if everyone out there could see what really is happening in our community. I have lived here all my life, and have learned to watch things that happen here very carefully. Not many people know the complete story about "your" our town. See, we are a very small, very rural area that is plagued with low income families. One would think that the opprotunity for a free meal would be one that is jumped upon with joy, however, Davis had a "free to the public, come hear my side of the story" Fish Fry this past week, and could only get about 100 people there, most of which were either his family or close friends who had already hear the story before. A pretty sad account I would say. I only wish some of you could have come to "hear his sob story", it was quite a treat. They even took open questions from the audience, you could have livened up the crowd, I am quite sure of it. Intresting note however as I scanned the crowd that night, not a single co-worker of Davis' was there, not one. The same can be said for the School Board meeting the previous week where Davis' family yelled for over an hour about how he had been done wrong ( bonifaynow.com , Joel Davis link, quite an eye opener to this mans family, you will find them to be quite arragant and much higher "holier" than you). Looked to me that he was out on a limb all alone when it came to his co-workers.

As for the elected officers, they have done what they can, for now. Davis has a contract, he has had no criminal action taken against him, so he cant be "fired", yet that is, but who knows what will happen at the end of his contract. They are offering to him what he didnt offer to students, that being compassion.

I really wish you and others would do that. These are really good men who were very misinformed when they supported Davis in his actions. They are doing everything in their legal power to right the problem. It is unfortunate that the man who they supported so strongly till the end has turned on them. I was at the meeting that is reported on the bonifaynow site. These men sat quietly as about 16 people questioned their courage, judgment, salvation, and any other personal area of pride they might have had. They were treated as less than dirt and gain a huge amount of respect in my book.

If this idiot really did lift up female students shirts, looking for "GP" symbols, he should be charged under child sexual predator laws.

No kidding. The other poster's good intentions notwithstanding, this is clear cause for his firing, at the very least, contract or no contract, supervisor's union or no union.

I think your statement can be true anywhere. I live in Texas and have never had any problem with someone not comfortable with my orientation. We live in an old established neighborhood in a Dallas suburb and everyone is very kind. Bigotry can happy anywhere even in places like Palm Springs.
The Mayor of Houston is Gay so is the Sheriff of Dallas County (an elected position).

Bigotry can happen anywhere, but that is not a reference to statistics or probabilities.

Red states, despite enclaves like Austin or parts of Houston or the Key West, have more homophobia, more anti gay laws, fewer legal protections for glbt people, smaller gay communities and larger pools of the ignorant and talibangelical.

A sick principal like this wouldn't have lasted for a day in MA, for example.

Good thing the students (younger demographic) were eventually able to reign in this sick fck in Ponce de Leon.
